Google has added a Temporary Chat feature to its Gemini app, allowing private conversations that are not saved, shown in recent chats, or used to personalise responses. These chats are stored for only 72 hours to process replies and feedback, and are not used to train AI models. The update also introduces a personal context setting to tailor responses using past chat details, a Keep Activity setting to replace Gemini Apps Activity, and more control over whether media from Gemini Live is used for improvements.
Google has introduced a series of updates to its Gemini app, giving users more privacy and control over their data. The biggest change is the introduction of a Temporary Chat feature, allowing users to have private conversations that won’t be saved or used to personalize future responses.
Temporary Chat for Private Conversations
With Temporary Chat, users can have quick, private exchanges without leaving a trace in recent chats or Gemini Apps Activity. Google confirms these chats will not be used to train its AI models. Instead, they are stored for up to 72 hours only just long enough for Gemini to respond and process any feedback. This feature is particularly useful when discussing personal matters, sensitive information, or brainstorming ideas outside one’s usual interests.

Personal Context for Tailored Suggestions
Google is also introducing a personal context setting that allows Gemini to remember useful information from previous chats. This could include your favorite books, characters, or hobbies, enabling Gemini to give more personalized suggestions and responses over time.
This setting is on by default, but users can turn it off manually in the app’s settings.
Keep Activity: More Control Over Data
Another key change is the Keep Activity setting, which will replace the current Gemini Apps Activity in the coming weeks. If enabled, it allows Google to use a sample of future uploads including files and photos to improve services. Users will also get enhanced control over whether audio, video, and screen shares from Gemini Live are used for service improvements, with this option off by default.
A Step Towards Greater Privacy
With these updates, Google is aiming to balance personalization with user privacy. Temporary Chat gives a space for completely private interactions, while Personal Context and Keep Activity allow users to choose how much of their data is remembered and used for AI improvements.
