Political Parties Cannot Be Silenced by Paperwork
BNP’s International Affairs Secretary Rumin Farhana has said that a political party cannot be banned just through paperwork or written orders. According to her, history shows that such bans never last and eventually the parties come back even stronger.
She said this while speaking on a television talk show on Tuesday night.
“আপনি যদি ইতিহাসের দিকে তাকান আপনি দেখবেন এই যে কাগজ আর কলম এটা দিয়ে কোনো রাজনৈতিক দলকে আপনি নিষিদ্ধ করতে পারবেন না। রাজনৈতিক দল কাগজ কলম দিয়ে আজ পর্যন্ত পৃথিবীর ইতিহাসে নিষিদ্ধ হয় নাই।”
Translation: “If you look at history, you will see that no political party has ever been banned just with pen and paper. Until today, no political party in the world has truly been silenced through paperwork.”

Temporary Ban, Long-Term Strength
Rumin Farhana explained that banning a party may give a false sense of peace for a short time, but in the long run, it makes that party more powerful.
“সাময়িকভাবে আপনি শান্তি পেতে পারেন। আত্মতুষ্টি লাভ করতে পারেন যে নিষিদ্ধ তো একটা করলাম। কিন্তু এই দল যে পরে হাজার গুণ শক্তিশালী হয়ে ফেরত আসবে না এটার কোনো গ্যারান্টি নাই।”
Transltion:“You may feel some peace for the moment, and feel satisfied that you have banned a party. But there is no guarantee that the party will not return a thousand times stronger.”
Example of Imran Khan’s Party in Pakistan
To support her point, Rumin Farhana referred to Pakistan’s example, where former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party lost its election symbol but still managed to win seats as independent candidates.
“পাকিস্তানের ইমরান খানের পার্টির মার্কা নিয়ে নিয়েছিল। কিন্তু ওরা স্বতন্ত্র নির্বাচন করে জিতে আসতে পেরেছে। মানুষের মন থেকে মোছার জন্য কাগজ কলমের প্রয়োজন নাই।”
Translation: “In Pakistan, Imran Khan’s party lost its election symbol. But they still managed to contest independently and win. You do not need pen and paper to erase a party from people’s minds.”
Criticism of the Current Government and Awami League
Rumin Farhana also criticized Nobel Laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus’s government, claiming its failures created an opportunity for the Awami League to stay relevant in the upcoming elections.
“ধরুন, আজকে যদি আপনি আওয়ামী লীগকে নিষিদ্ধ না করে মানুষের আদালতে তাকে ছেড়ে দিতেন, আসো নির্বাচন পারলে করো কোনো অসুবিধা নাই, তাহলে কয়টাতে আওয়ামী লীগ সাহস করে প্রার্থী দিতো? আর যদি প্রার্থী কাউকে দিতো, সেই প্রার্থী এলাকায় গিয়ে প্রচারণা চালিয়ে নির্বাচন করার সাহস দেখাতে পারতো? পারতো না।”
Translation: “Suppose you had not banned Awami League but left it to the people’s court in elections. How many seats would Awami League dare to field candidates in? Even if they had, could those candidates really campaign in their areas? They could not.”
Rumin Farhana added that if Dr. Yunus’s administration had clearly proven itself to be better than Sheikh Hasina’s rule, Awami League would not have been able to nominate a single candidate.
Awami League’s Current Position
However, she observed that because the country is facing multiple crises, Awami League might still try to participate in the election by fielding candidates.
“কিন্তু এখন যেহেতু সকল দিক থেকে দেশের পরিস্থিতি নাজুক। এখন আওয়ামী লীগ হয়তো ক্যান্ডিডেট দিলেও দিতে পারে।”
Translation: “But since the situation of the country is fragile in every way, Awami League might still field candidates in the election.”
