Nur Declines Gunman Protection
On Monday (22 December), Nurul Haque Nur, President of Ganoadhikar Parishad, rejected the government’s offer of personal gunman protection. He made the statement while attending a protest meeting in front of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) building on the occasion of six years since the DUCSU attack.
Nur’s Statement on Public Safety
Nurul Haque Nur said:
“একক ব্যক্তিকে গানম্যান দিয়ে গোটা দেশকে নিরাপদ করা সম্ভব নয়। জনগণের নিরাপত্তার জন্য প্রশাসন ও আইনশৃঙ্খলা বাহিনীকে সঠিকভাবে পুনর্গঠন করতে হবে। শুধু নির্বাচনের প্রার্থীদের নিরাপত্তা দিয়ে পরিস্থিতি স্বাভাবিক করা সম্ভব নয়। আইনশৃঙ্খলা উন্নতি না হলে ভোটাররা ভোট কেন্দ্রে যাবে না।”
Translation: “It is not possible to make the whole country safe by giving a gunman to a single individual. To ensure public safety, the administration and law enforcement agencies must be properly restructured. Simply providing security to election candidates cannot normalize the situation. Until law and order improve and a safe voting environment is created, voters will not go to polling stations.”

Warning to Current Advisory Council
Nurul Haque Nur added that he is rejecting the government’s gunman offer because those responsible for previous attacks have not been punished:
“যে সরকারের আইনশৃঙ্খলা বাহিনী জনসম্মুখে তাদের কার্যালয়ের সামনে হামলা করেছে, সেই হামলাকারীদের বিচার না হওয়া পর্যন্ত সরকারের দেয়া গানম্যান আমি প্রত্যাখ্যান করছি।”
Translation: “The law enforcement agencies of the government attacked openly in front of their offices. Until the attackers are punished, I reject the gunman provided by the government.”
Unpunished Past Attacks
Nur referred to attacks carried out by police and military personnel on 29 August this year, disguised in civilian clothes. He said a judicial committee was formed on 4 September to investigate the incident and submit a report within 30 working days. However, the attackers have not yet been identified or punished.
He added that this shows silent support from the current interim government for those responsible.
Strong Warning
Nur warned:
“গানম্যান প্রত্যাখ্যান করার পর যদি আমার ওপর কোনো হামলা ঘটে, তাহলে বর্তমান উপদেষ্টা পরিষদের সদস্যদের দায়ভার হবে।”
Translation:“If any attack happens on me after rejecting the gunman, the current advisory council members will be responsible.”
The interim government has decided to provide gunman protection to 20 political figures who are considered at security risk. Nurul Haque Nur’s rejection highlights the demand for proper public safety reform rather than selective personal security.
