Professor ABM Obaidul Islam is going to take charge as the new Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University (DU), one of the country’s top higher education institutions. He is a professor in the university’s Department of Physics and is currently serving as the Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh Open University (BOU).
Education and Primary and Mass Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon gave this information at a press conference organized at the Ministry of Education on Monday (March 16).
Professor Mamun Ahmed to be UGC Chairman
Meanwhile, Dhaka University’s Associate Vice-Chancellor Professor Mamun Ahmed is being given the responsibility of the new Chairman of the Bangladesh University Grants Commission (UGC). Through this, new leadership is coming to the country’s higher education sector regulatory body.

Background to the resignation of the current incumbents
Earlier, Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Niaz Ahmed Khan submitted an application to the President seeking relief from the post on February 22. On the other hand, UGC Chairman Professor SMA Faiz has applied for relief from his post this morning citing physical illness.
It is worth noting that after the student uprising of 24, Niaz Ahmed Khan and SMA Faiz were appointed to Dhaka University and UGC respectively.
Appointment of new vice-chancellors in other universities
At the same time, it has been decided to appoint new vice-chancellors in several other universities of the country. Those who are going to take charge as vice-chancellors in these universities are—
- Bangladesh Open University – Professor Siddiqur Rahman Khan
- Chittagong University – Professor Al Forkan
- Rajshahi University – Professor Faridul Islam
- Jagannath University – Professor Md. Raish Uddin
- Central University – Professor Nurul Islam
