“One Party on Lap, Another on Shoulder”: Mirza Abbas

Mirza Abbas

BNP Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas has sharply criticized the government for favoring certain political parties while trying to wipe out BNP from the political field. He made these comments on Friday during a silent procession organized by Dhaka South BNP in front of their central office in Nayapaltan.

Abbas: “One Party in the Government’s Lap, Another on Its Shoulder”

He accused the ruling party of giving special treatment to some political groups while pushing others aside.

“You carry one party on your lap and another on your shoulder, but don’t plan to erase BNP from politics.”

Abbas called on the government to arrange elections soon to restore peace in the country.

“We are cooperating. Hold elections quickly—peace will return.”

Deep Sorrow Over Martyrs Being Politicized

Speaking with visible emotion, Mirza Abbas expressed grief over how the sacrifices of July-August movement martyrs are being used for political benefits.

“Sometimes I deeply regret and feel great pain for the martyrs. I was also on the streets during the movement, I stood facing bullets, I stood right here on this stage.”

He continued:

“If they could see how their sacrifice is being turned into political trade, they would be ashamed.”

Accusation Against Specific Political Groups

Abbas alleged that some parties are trying to gain political power by using the name of the movement martyrs.

“They always mention ‘movement martyrs’—but the martyrs didn’t support any single person or party. They gave their lives for the whole nation.”

Comments on Jamaat and Opportunistic Politics

He also mocked a religious leader who once spoke strongly against Jamaat but is now aligned with them. Abbas pointed out that Jamaat leaders have held positions in both BNP and Awami League governments at different times.

A Warning to Critics

Mirza Abbas warned those who try to associate BNP unfairly with rival groups or spread misleading comments.

“I urge my brothers—control your tongue. BNP is not a party of chaos; we fight alongside the people for democracy.”

Peaceful Rally Ends in Rampura

The silent procession, led by Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal, started from Nayapaltan at 5 PM and ended near Abul Hotel in Rampura, passing through Kakrail and Mouchak. Law enforcement officers were seen in alert positions throughout the route.

The event was chaired by Dhaka South BNP Convenor Rafiqul Haque Majnu and conducted by Member Secretary Tanvir Ahmed Robin. Other central and local leaders present included Ishraq Hossain, Mira Sarafat Ali Sapu, Arifa Ruma, and Nadia Pathan Papon, among others.
