OpenAI’s Explosive Growth as Annualized Revenue Surges to $10 Billion in 2025

OpenAI announced on Monday that its annualized revenue run rate has soared to $10 billion as of June, nearly doubling from $5.5 billion in December 2024. This rapid growth underscores the company’s dominant position in the AI industry as enterprise and consumer adoption of its ChatGPT models continues to expand globally.

The new revenue milestone signals OpenAI is well on track to meet its full-year revenue target of $12.7 billion, which the company had previously disclosed to investors. Notably, the $10 billion figure excludes licensing revenue from key partner Microsoft (MSFT.O) as well as large one-time deals, according to a spokesperson. The revenue update was first reported by CNBC.

The surge reflects not only OpenAI’s expanding product line, including ChatGPT subscription services for individuals and businesses, but also the increasing integration of its models across industries, from software development to customer service and education. The company has also seen significant traction among enterprise clients seeking customized AI tools.

Despite reporting a $5 billion loss last year, OpenAI’s revenue growth highlights its commanding lead in terms of scale over competitors in the AI race. Rivals such as Anthropic, backed by Google and Amazon, have also seen momentum. Anthropic recently hit a $3 billion annualized revenue mark, driven largely by demand from code-generation startups leveraging its Claude models.

OpenAI’s exponential revenue climb is bolstered by a growing user base. As of the end of March, the company reported over 500 million weekly active users globally. Its flagship product, ChatGPT, now serves both free-tier users and a growing number of paid subscribers across ChatGPT Plus, Team, and Enterprise plans.

In March, OpenAI revealed plans to raise up to $40 billion in a new funding round led by Japan’s SoftBank Group (9984.T), potentially valuing the company at a staggering $300 billion. Such a valuation would place OpenAI among the world’s most valuable private technology companies.

OpenAI’s continued momentum reinforces the broader AI boom, as businesses race to adopt generative AI technologies that promise to reshape industries. The company’s trajectory suggests it could remain at the forefront of this transformation, not just in technological innovation but also in commercial dominance.

As the race for AI leadership intensifies, OpenAI’s latest revenue milestone cements its status as one of the fastest-growing tech companies in history  and one to watch in the months ahead.
