Massive Eid Travel Rush Begins in Dhaka
As government offices and many private institutions have closed, a large number of People Leaving Dhaka to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr with their families in their home districts. Although there is no exact number, police officials estimate that more than one crore people will leave the capital this year.
Over 1 Crore People Expected to Leave
Acting commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Mohammad Sarwar, told journalists:
“More than one crore people are expected to travel from Dhaka to different districts to celebrate Eid with their loved ones.”
He also said that around 15 to 20 lakh people are leaving Dhaka every day from March 16 to 20. At the same time, about 20 to 25 lakh people are expected to enter the capital from other districts.

Terminals Overflow as Holiday Begins
The mass movement of people started with the beginning of a seven-day holiday from Tuesday (March 17, 2026). Bus terminals, especially Gabtoli, are crowded with passengers trying to return home.
Police Strengthen Security Measures
Inspector General of Police Ali Hossain Fakir, along with DMP Acting Commissioner Mohammad Sarwar, visited the Gabtoli Bus Terminal to monitor the situation and speak with passengers.
The IGP said:
“While Eid travel often causes severe traffic jams and suffering, this year special importance has been given to ensure a more comfortable journey.”
Law enforcement agencies are on high alert to:
- Prevent harassment of passengers
- Stop overcharging of fares
- Reduce traffic congestion
Police presence has also been increased in terminal areas to maintain order and manage traffic smoothly. Depending on the moon sighting, Eid-ul-Fitr is expected to be celebrated in Bangladesh on March 20 or 21.
