The invitation was confirmed by a signed letter from Arua Haneen Elrayes, President of the Oxford Union Society. The matter was later confirmed by Sadia Farzana, a member of the office cell of the National Citizen Party (NCP). According to the letter, Sarjis Alam has been invited to speak at one of the Union’s prestigious Thursday debates, which are among its most high-profile events.

Debate Topic Focuses on Youth Movements

The proposed debate topic is:

“Are modern youth activists truly reshaping political realities, or are they primarily engaged in self-promotion?”

This topic reflects global discussions about the real impact of social media-driven and youth-led political movements.

Recognition of Role in Bangladesh’s 2024 Student Movement

In the invitation letter, Oxford Union described Sarjis Alam as a key figure in Bangladesh’s Gen-Z-led political uprising. As a coordinator of the anti-discrimination student movement, he played a central role in the 2024 quota reform protests, which later expanded into a nationwide uprising. The letter also mentioned that the protests eventually contributed to the fall of the government led by Sheikh Hasina, drawing significant international attention to the student leaders involved.

Participation Window Set Between April and June

Oxford Union stated that Sarjis Alam would be scheduled to speak on one of the Thursdays between 30 April and 18 June 2026, depending on final arrangements and availability. The invitation to Oxford Union marks a significant international recognition for a young Bangladeshi political activist. If he participates, Sarjis Alam will join a long list of global leaders, thinkers, and activists who have spoken at one of the world’s most respected debating platforms.
