Palak and Inu Shown Arrested in Russell Gazi Murder Case

Former State Minister for ICT Zunaid Ahmed Palak and former Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu have officially been shown arrested in the murder case of Russell Gazi, who died during the July uprising. The order was granted on Thursday by Dhaka’s Senior Judicial Magistrate Tajul Islam Sohag.

Police Sub-Inspector Md. Anwar Hossain from Ashulia Police Station submitted the petition to show Palak arrested. He was produced before the court for the hearing.

Quran Recitation in Jail: “I Have Finished One Khatam”

Before the court hearing began, Palak was seen speaking with his lawyer, Farzana Yasmin Rakhi. She asked if he needed anything, such as books or other necessities. In reply, Palak said he was spending his time reading the Holy Quran in jail.

“কারাগারে নিয়মিত কোরআন শরীফ পড়ছি। কোরআন শরীফ এক খতম দিয়েছি।”
“I regularly read the Quran in jail. I have completed a full recitation.”

His lawyer also noticed he was wearing a back support belt. When asked about his health condition, Palak replied:

“আছি কোনরকম।”
“I’m just somehow managing.”

Lawyer Farzana Yasmin Rakhi added,

“তিনি কারাগারে কোরআন শরীফ পড়ছেন। কারাগারেই এক খতম দিয়েছেন। কোমরে ব্যাকপেইন আছে।”
“He is reading the Quran in prison and has completed one full recitation. He also has lower back pain.”

Background of the Case: What Happened to Russell Gazi?

According to case details, on August 5 last year, Russell Gazi (27) was taking part in a protest in the Gazi Chat area under Ashulia Police Station during the July uprising. At around 11 am, he was reportedly shot and injured by ruling party activists. He later died while undergoing treatment at Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar.

Russell Gazi was the son of Belayet Gazi and Selina Begum, residents of Gazi Chat Madhyapara in Ashulia.

Multiple Charges Against Palak

Palak was arrested earlier on August 15 last year. Since then, he has been shown arrested in several cases involving murder, attempted murder, and corruption. He is currently in custody at Kashimpur Central Jail in Gazipur.
