What Happened: Victim’s Statement

The incident reportedly occurred in a flat located in the Bashundhara Residential Area of Dhaka. Kazi Hasan Mahmud, a Deputy Director at Grameenphone, lives there with his family.

On Monday, May 12, around 2:30 PM, a young woman named Ilma, who lives in a nearby flat with her family, faced a heartbreaking situation involving her pet cat.

Ilma shared the full story in a Facebook post in a group called “Cat Society of Bangladesh”.

The Cat Entered the Neighbor’s Flat

Ilma explained that her pet cat accidentally entered the neighbour’s flat. When her younger brother returned from school, he heard the cat crying loudly. Ilma rushed to find the source of the sound and saw the door of the neighbor’s flat – where Kazi Hasan Mahmud and his wife Farhana Khanam live – was open.

She entered the flat and saw their housemaid, Majida, beating a white cat with an iron rod. Ilma recognized the cat as her own – a 5-month-old female kitten she had rescued from the streets a few months earlier.

The Cat Was Bleeding and Shaking

Ilma described the horrifying condition of her cat:

“The cat was bleeding, trembling, and blood was coming from her nose. She couldn’t even move properly. She was only outside for 10 minutes, and in that short time, they crushed her body like this!”

She also mentioned a previous incident:

“Six months ago, this same family threw another one of my cats from the 8th floor. That cat suffered lung injuries and, despite nine months of treatment, could not survive.”

Hostile Behaviour from the Neighbors

Ilma said that when she calmly tried to protest, the family behaved very rudely, shouted at her, used abusive language, and even threatened her with a lawsuit. According to Ilma, housemaid Majida admitted that she was ordered by Farhana Khanam to beat the cat.

Ilma also claimed to have CCTV footage, photos, and videos that clearly prove the abuse and capture the cries of the injured cat.

Outrage on Social Media and Legal Action

Ilma’s post, which included pictures and videos, went viral on social media very fast. Thousands of individuals vented their rage and demanded that Grameenphone discipline their employee severely.

Ilma has said that she will report the incident to the police.

Kazi Hasan Mahmud was contacted to get his version of events, but his phone was discovered to be off, and he was unavailable for comment.

Concluding Remark

This tragic tragedy has once again served as a reminder that animal cruelty is a significant problem and that strong regulations and compassion are necessary to protect defenceless animals. The country is currently waiting to see how Grameenphone responds to this circumstance and whether the innocent cat will receive justice.
