The government has suspended Mohammad Iqbal Hossain, former Deputy Commissioner of Police (DC) of Wari Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
He faced severe criticism after he made a controversial remark targeting former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, saying,
“If I shoot one person, he will die, the rest will not survive, sir.”
His suspension was announced in a notification issued by the Public Security Division of the Home Ministry on Wednesday, July 23. The notification, signed by Senior Secretary Nasimul Ghani, said that Mohammad Iqbal Hossain has been absent from work without permission from the authorities since August 28, 2023. According to the Civil Servant Code of Conduct, this is “akin to absconding” and is considered a punishable offense.

It is worth noting that a video of police firing during the 2023 anti-discrimination student movement went viral on social media. In the video, Iqbal Hossain is seen saying to the then Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal—
“When I shoot, one dies, one is injured. Only one goes, sir, the rest don’t go.”
This statement created a strong reaction on social media and raised questions about the responsible behavior of the police administration.
