Fatal Incident at Uttara EPZ
A serious clash erupted today, 2nd September 2025, between law enforcement personnel and workers outside the Uttara Export Processing Zone (EPZ) in Nilphamari. The confrontation left one worker dead and at least six others injured by gunfire.
The deceased has been identified as Habibur Rahman Habib, son of Dulal Mia, from Kazirhat village in Shongrashi Union of Nilphamari Sadar. Red DIG Aminul Islam confirmed the death to Jamuna Television.
Background: Worker Protests at Evergreen Factory
Local sources report that workers at the Evergreen underwear factory in Nilphamari EPZ had been protesting for several days over various demands. Tensions escalated when the factory management suddenly closed the factory on Monday night without addressing the workers’ demands.
Early Tuesday morning, workers gathered in large numbers outside the EPZ to protest and attempted to enter the premises.

Clashes with Security Forces
When the army and police tried to prevent the workers from entering the EPZ, the protesters reportedly attacked an army vehicle. In response, security personnel opened fire to disperse the crowd.
Six injured workers were immediately admitted to Nilphamari Sadar Hospital, where doctors confirmed that Habibur Rahman was brought in dead. The remaining five workers are undergoing treatment.
Dr. Farhan Tanvir ul Islam, on duty at the hospital, said:
“Around 9 a.m., six gunshot victims were admitted. One of them, Habibur, was dead on arrival. The other five are receiving medical care.”
Deployment of Additional Forces
Authorities deployed police, army, and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel to control the situation. Lieutenant Colonel SM Badruddoza of the 56 BGB confirmed the deployment and stated that the situation is currently under control.
Local residents report that following the news of Habibur’s death, more workers gathered near the EPZ, heightening tensions. Security forces are actively working to restore peace and prevent further clashes.
