Several political parties in Bangladesh are currently active and making headlines in various ways. Among these political parties, some are carriers of traditional politics, while others are emerging on new platforms. Below is a brief introduction to these parties.
The three notable political parties currently discussed in Bangladesh’s political landscape are:
- Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)
- Jamat
- National Citizens Party (NCP)
All three parties are presently in the spotlight for various reasons BNP for their movements and political agendas, Islami Andolan Bangladesh for their stance on religion-based politics, and NCP for drawing public attention due to recent controversial activities.
Can we establish a new political culture in the Bangladesh of the future? Or are we merely conserving the traditional culture? A query for the students and young people!
National Citizens Party (NCP):
The party has been accused of extortion when one of its members was arrested for stopping a truck and demanding money in support of a Letter of Credit (LC) from a member of the army.
Jamat
In Chattogram, Jamat expelled one of its workers for beating a woman with a stick. The party attributed this to criminal behavior. This is an example of transparency and accountability, where the party took action itself.
BNP:
Among these parties, BNP has the highest number of reported incidents, including:
-
Arresting a leader by waking him up from sleep
-
Allegations of breaking limbs on a leader’s orders for not paying extortion money
-
Attacks on protesting students and injuries to three leaders in police violence
-
Obstruction of a central BNP leader’s grave visit
-
Attempt to rescue a female leader by breaking into a police station
-
Clashes and extortion allegations against the student wing
-
Torture of the university student council secretary
-
Expulsion of a student wing leader from a government job
-
Extortion case filed against a student leader in a garment factory
-
Protests against harassment of female workers
-
Threats to kill a student wing member and beating of two workers
-
Incidents of vandalism, arrests, and threats
All these allegations paint a troubled picture of the political and student activities of BNP.

Toward a Democratic and Peaceful Political for Political Parties
These kinds of incidents make us ask a very important question that Are we really moving toward a fresh, new political culture or are we just holding on tighter to old patterns of violence, extortion, abuse of power, and protecting narrow party interests?
This is a question that students, young people, and aware citizens must face head on. After all, the values and ethics we bring into politics today will shape the Bangladesh of tomorrow.
What we see unfolding is more than just politics it’s a wake-up call for everyone who cares about the future of our society. The responsibility doesn’t rest only on political parties, it reflects the collective conscience and ethical stance of all of us.
While the old political powers still dominate, new parties are stepping onto the scene. But their future success will depend on their commitment to true ideals, integrity, meaningful public engagement, and accountability. Our youth are yearning for a political culture that is healthy one that prioritizes democracy, peaceful dialogue, and honest leadership.
The biggest question facing this generation remains that- Will politics continue to be a battle for power or will it become a genuine path toward the welfare and betterment of the people?
