A controversy has erupted after a Rajshahi University teacher described Begum Rokeya as “Murtad” and “Kafir” on social media.
The incident took place on the same day the nation celebrated her birth anniversary and honoured her contributions to women’s education and empowerment.

On this special day, the interim government’s Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus presented the Begum Rokeya Padak to four distinguished women. The award recognises the work of those who greatly contribute to women’s rights, education, and social awakening—areas in which Begum Rokeya is considered a pioneer.

RU Teacher’s Facebook Post Sparks Outrage

Khondaker Muhammad Mahmudul Hasan, an associate professor of Physics at Rajshahi University, posted a photo of Begum Rokeya on his Facebook profile and labelled her as “Murtad” and “Kafir”.
Translation: “apostate and non-believer”

He also attached a long-written statement where he criticised different comments made by Begum Rokeya from a religious point of view.

Background of the Teacher

Mahmudul Hasan started his teaching career in 2009 as a lecturer at Eastern University. Later, he taught at BRAC University and eventually joined the Department of Physics at Rajshahi University in 2013.

Earlier Post Also Created Debate

On December 5, the same teacher had posted another discussion about Begum Rokeya’s comments in a religious context. That post also stirred controversy online and added to the current debate.

The latest incident has opened a new round of discussions in both society and the education community. Many are questioning whether such remarks towards a national figure like Begum Rokeya are appropriate for a university teacher.
