In a remarkable wildlife event, locals in Manikganj successfully captured a rare freshwater crocodile from a branch canal of the Ichamati River in Choukighata area under Hatipara union of Manikganj Sadar upazila on 8 November.

For the past week, residents had been spotting the crocodile in the canal, sparking widespread panic across the area. In response, the Forest Department had earlier urged locals to remain calm and avoid taking any action that could endanger themselves or the animal.

Confirming the development Wildlife Inspector Abdullah Sadique of the Wildlife Crime Control Unit said,

“The crocodile has been rescued and sent to the Khulna Wildlife Rescue Centre this afternoon (8 November).”

According to the official, this animal is approximately 11 feet long and weighs over 100 kilograms. Around 9pm on Friday, local residents successfully captured the animal using ropes and cloth traps before handing it over to forest officials.

Members of the Wildlife Crime Control Unit later arrived at the site to ensure the crocodile’s safe transfer to the rescue centre. Authorities have yet to confirm how the crocodile ended up in the Ichamati canal, a region where such sightings are exceedingly rare. Wildlife experts believe it may have strayed from its natural habitat due to flooding or disorientation.
