Record-Breaking Rainfall Predicted in Bangladesh on Dec 20-21

The Meteorological Department has forecast a possible low-pressure system forming in the Bay of Bengal within 24 hours, raising the chances of significant rainfall across the country. Weather expert Dr. Mostafa Kamal Polash, a PhD researcher at the University of Saskatchewan, predicts record-breaking rainfall on December 20-21 due to the combined effects of a Bay of Bengal low-pressure system and a strong westerly disturbance.
The heaviest rainfall is expected in Khulna, Barisal, Dhaka, and Chattogram divisions, with moderate rainfall likely in Rajshahi, Mymensingh, and Sylhet, and lighter rain in Rangpur. Dr. Polash is over 90% confident in this prediction.
Farmers, especially potato growers in heavily affected regions, are advised to halt irrigation until December 22 and prepare to drain excess water to protect crops. The extended forecast indicates increasing rain activity in the coming days.
Meteorologist Shahinul Islam mentioned that the subcontinental high-pressure ridge extends over West Bengal and adjoining areas, while the seasonal low lies over the southern Bay of Bengal, extending into the northern Bay. Consequently, a low-pressure system is likely to form over the southeastern Bay of Bengal within the next 24 hours.
The weather forecast until 9:00 AM on Tuesday, December 17, indicates predominantly dry conditions across the country, with partly cloudy skies. Both daytime and nighttime temperatures may rise slightly, and light to moderate fog is expected in some areas late at night and early in the morning.
Similar conditions are predicted through 9:00 AM on Wednesday, December 18, and Thursday, December 19, with stable daytime temperatures and minor nighttime increases. Light to moderate fog is also likely during the late-night and early-morning hours. Looking ahead, the Meteorological Department forecasts a chance of rainfall over the next five days.
