Trade Advisor Sheikh Bashiruddin said that the government is trying to reduce the counter-tariff imposed by the United States from 20 percent to 15 percent. Discussions and efforts by the relevant ministries, including the Ministry of Commerce, to reduce the tariff are ongoing. There is no final agreement on tariff negotiations with the United States yet, but the process is underway. At the same time, discussions are also underway to conclude a free trade agreement (FTA) with Japan, South Korea and Singapore.
The Bangladesh government is actively working to further reduce the countervailing duties imposed by the United States. The current duty is 20 percent, but efforts are underway to reduce it to 15 percent, said Trade Adviser Sheikh Bashiruddin. He made this information at a press conference on Tuesday (August 12) after a meeting to set export targets for the current fiscal year 2025-26.
Initiative to reduce tariffs
Trade advisor said,
শুল্ক কমানোর বিষয়ে বাণিজ্য মন্ত্রণালয়সহ সরকারের অন্যান্য মন্ত্রণালয়ের প্রয়াস জারি আছে এবং থাকবে। আমরা ট্যারিফ এবং নন-ট্যারিফ বিষয়গুলোকে অ্যাড্রেস করার বিষয়ে আলোচনা করছি।
Translation: Efforts by the Ministry of Commerce and other government ministries to reduce tariffs are ongoing and will continue. We are discussing addressing tariff and non-tariff issues.
He said,
‘যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের পাল্টা শুল্ক ২০ শতাংশ থেকে কমিয়ে ১৫ শতাংশে নামিয়ে আনার চেষ্টা করছে সরকার। যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের সঙ্গে শুল্ক আলোচনা এখনো চলমান আছে। চূড়ান্ত চুক্তির আগে এটি হতে পারে।’
Translation: “The government is trying to reduce the US counter-tariff from 20 percent to 15 percent. Tariff negotiations with the US are still ongoing. This may happen before a final agreement.”
The exact date for a formal agreement with the United States on counter-tariffs has not yet been set. The United States has also not given a final date in this regard. The United States Trade Representative (USTR) is currently working on drafting the agreement. The Trade Advisor said that discussions are currently underway with Japan, South Korea and Singapore to conclude a Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

The advisor also said,
‘আশা করছি এই শুল্ক কমতে পারে। তবে এটা নিশ্চিত করে বলা যাচ্ছে না। কারণ যারা আরোপ করেছেন (যুক্তরাষ্ট্র) তাদের ওপরেই বিষয়টি নির্ভর করে।’
Translation: ‘I hope this tariff can be reduced. But it cannot be said for sure. Because it depends on those who imposed it (the United States).’
In response to a question about when a formal agreement with the United States on counter-tariffs will be reached, the advisor said,
‘আনুষ্ঠানিক চুক্তির এখনো সুনির্দিষ্ট দিনক্ষণ ঠিক হয়নি। যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের পক্ষ থেকে এখনও কিছু জানানো হয়নি।’
Translation: ‘The specific date for the formal agreement has not yet been decided. Nothing has been announced from the United States yet.’
Noting that discussions are underway at the conference on signing a free trade agreement, the trade advisor said,
‘এই মুহূর্তে জাপান, দক্ষিণ কোরিয়া এবং সিঙ্গাপুরের সাথে মুক্ত বাণিজ্য চুক্তি করার বিষয়ে আলোচনা হচ্ছে। মনে রাখতে হবে যে কোনো কোনো দেশের সাথে বাংলাদেশের মুক্ত বাণিজ্য চুক্তি অনুকূল না-ও হতে পারে। আমাদের যে শুল্কমুক্ত মার্কেট অ্যাকসেস রয়েছে, আমরা সেটি পুরোপুরি ব্যবহার করতে চাই—বিশেষত যুক্তরাজ্য ও ইউরোপীয় ইউনিয়নে।’
Translation: ‘Right now, discussions are underway on signing a free trade agreement with Japan, South Korea and Singapore. It should be remembered that Bangladesh’s free trade agreement with some countries may not be favorable. We want to fully utilize the duty-free market access we have – especially in the United Kingdom and the European Union.’
