Rejected by BRAC for Madrasha Background but Hired by Oxford

BRAC

At the University of Oxford’s Merton College, renowned scholar Jaber Ubaed was just named an Academic Officer. He is starting a new phase in his career with this role, which is his third at Oxford University.

An Unexpected Reversal at BRAC University

BRAC University in Dhaka sent an offer to Ubaed earlier this year for a faculty position. He took the offer, quit his Oxford job, and even made travel arrangements to Bangladesh. However, BRAC University abruptly rescinded their employment offer—without providing an explanation—just before his planned departure.

This unexpected decision shocked many in the academic community. Ubaed, who has a madrassah background and has expressed pro-July sentiments on social media, was left in a difficult situation. It is highly likely that these ideological and personal considerations played a role in BRAC University’s choice.

A Quick Turnaround: Oxford Hires Him Again

Ubaed continued to apply for fresh chances and put his faith in Allah (SWT) in spite of the setback. On May 19, he submitted an application for the position of Academic Officer at Merton College. On May 20, he received an invitation to take a written exam, and on May 26, he had an interview. He got the formal offer a few days later.Just days later, he received the official offer.

Ubaed said that he felt comfortable throughout the talk and thanked everyone for supporting him during this difficult time.

The Silence at BRAC University and the Outrage on Social Media

The public’s fury over the employment offer’s removal has grown, but BRAC University has said nothing at all. They have not offered a rationale or explanation for their sudden decision. However, the university was severely criticised by social media users for its impolitic actions. The problem became much more troubling when a student who had defended Ubaed and condemned the university’s unethical actions was allegedly singled out and ridiculed.

Many people think that this episode has shown a more serious problem of discrimination at BRAC University, particularly against those from diverse political, religious, or social backgrounds.

A Story of Resilience and Integrity

Jaber Ubaed’s story is not just about being hired again by Oxford. It is a powerful reminder of staying firm in one’s faith, maintaining dignity, and trusting in better outcomes—even when others behave unfairly. While BRAC University remains silent, Oxford has once again recognized his potential and welcomed him back.
