Jamaat Chief Calls for Mutual Respect and Unity During U.S. Visit
Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said,
আমরা যদি দেশ পরিচালনার সুযোগ পাই, তাহলে ভারতের সঙ্গে সম্পর্ক হবে পারস্পরিক সম্মানের ভিত্তিতে। মানুষ নিজের জায়গা বদলাতে পারে, কিন্তু প্রতিবেশী বদলাতে পারে না। আমরা আমাদের প্রতিবেশীকে সম্মান করতে চাই এবং একইভাবে প্রতিবেশীর কাছ থেকেও সম্মান প্রত্যাশা করি।
Translation: If we get the chance to run the country, then the relationship with India will be based on mutual respect. People can change their place, but they cannot change their neighbors. We want to respect our neighbors and expect respect from them in the same way.

He made the remarks in response to a question from reporters about relations with India at a view-sharing meeting held in New York on Wednesday evening (October 22) local time during his week-long visit to the United States.
The Jamaat Amir said,
বাংলাদেশের চেয়ে ভারত আয়তনে ২৬ গুণ বড় দেশ। তাদের সম্পদ, জনশক্তি আমাদের চেয়ে অনেক বেশি। আমরা তাদের অবস্থান বিবেচনায় সম্মান করি। তবে আমাদের ছোট ভূখণ্ড ও প্রায় ১৮ কোটি মানুষের অস্তিত্বকেও তাদের সম্মান করতে হবে।
Translation: “India is a country 26 times larger in size than Bangladesh. Their wealth and manpower are much greater than ours. We respect them considering their position. However, they must also respect our small territory and the existence of about 180 million people.”
Message of rights and unity of people of different religions
In response to a question about ensuring the rights of people of different religions, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said,
গত প্রায় দেড় বছরে আমাদের কার্যক্রমের মধ্য দিয়েই আমরা এর জবাব দিয়েছি। একটা বিষয় একেবারে পরিষ্কার করতে চাই, গত ৫৪ বছরে বাংলাদেশ থেকে বিভিন্ন ধর্মের মানুষের অভিবাসন ঘটেছে, মুসলমানদেরও।আমরা জোর করে কোনো কিছু বন্ধের পক্ষে নই, আবার জোর করে কাউকে দেশ থেকে তাড়ানোর পক্ষেও নই।
Translation: We have responded to this through our activities in the last one and a half years. I want to make one thing absolutely clear, in the last 54 years, people of different religions have migrated from Bangladesh, including Muslims. We are not in favor of forcibly closing anything, nor are we in favor of forcibly expelling anyone from the country.
Dr. Shafiqur Rahman also said,
আমরা মেজরিটি ও মাইনরিটি ধারণায় বিশ্বাস করি না। আমরা বলি ‘উই নিড ইউনিটি’। মেজরিটি-মাইনরিটি বলা মানেই বিভাজন তৈরি করা, যা একদল অন্য দলের মুখোমুখি দাঁড় করায়। গত ৫৪ বছর ধরে আমরা এর ভয়াবহতা দেখেছি—আমরা আর তা দেখতে চাই না।
Translation: “We do not believe in the concept of majority and minority. We say ‘We need unity’. Saying majority-minority means creating division, which pits one group against another. We have seen the horror of this for the last 54 years – we do not want to see it again.”
He further said,
আমাদের কৃষ্টি, সংস্কৃতি ও সভ্যতার ভিত্তিতে যুগের পর যুগ আমরা মিলেমিশে বসবাসের যে ঐতিহ্য গড়ে তুলেছি, সেটিকেই পুনঃপ্রতিষ্ঠা করতে চাই। যে কয়েকটি কালো দাগ পড়েছে, সেগুলো উপড়ে ফেলব ইনশাআল্লাহ, যাতে দল ও ধর্মের বিভাজনে জাতি আর বিভক্ত না হয়।
Translation: “We want to re-establish the tradition of living together in harmony that we have built over the ages on the basis of our culture, heritage and civilization. We will uproot the few black spots that have appeared, InshaAllah, so that the nation is no longer divided by party and religious divisions.”
He again said,
আমরা অনুভব করি, কেউ যদি গত ৫৪ বছরে অন্য কারো সম্পত্তি অবৈধভাবে দখল করে থাকে এবং তার প্রমাণ থাকে, তবে আমরা সেই সম্পত্তি ফেরত দেওয়ার পক্ষে—এটিই আমাদের অবস্থান।
Translation: “We feel that if someone has illegally occupied someone else’s property in the last 54 years and there is evidence of it, then we are in favor of returning that property—this is our position.”
In response to a question about whether there is a possibility of meeting with any top political leader of the country during his visit to the United States, he said,
এই প্রশ্নটির উত্তর বৃহত্তর স্বার্থে আপাতত এড়িয়ে যাচ্ছি।
Translation: I am avoiding answering this question for the greater good for now.
