A girl named Rokeya from Nilphamari made a very unique decision. Even though she got admission opportunities at four top universities in Bangladesh, she rejected all of them because she only wanted to study at a university that has her own name – Begum Rokeya University (BRUR), Rangpur. After years of trying, she finally got admitted to her dream university in the 2024-25 session.
Chose BRUR Over Four Big Universities
Rokeya, from Dimla upazila of Nilphamari, is the eldest among three siblings. She scored GPA 4.56 in SSC and GPA 4.33 in HSC.
She got admission chances at Chittagong University (CU), Rajshahi University (RU), Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), and National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam University. But she did not take any of those because her only dream was to study at Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR).
Finally, in the 2024-25 academic session, she was admitted to the Public Administration Department of BRUR.

First Attempt and Sacrifice
In 2023-24, Rokeya was called for viva at Chittagong University and could have been admitted, but she rejected the chance. At Rajshahi University, her merit position was 1,358 in A unit, which was enough for admission, but she still refused. Later, she prepared harder, got waiting list position at SUST, and even received a subject at Kazi Nazrul University. Yet, she did not change her mind.
Her Determination
When asked if she was sad for not joining CU the first time, Rokeya said:
“First time my father spent a lot of money. Naturally, he was upset. Then I went to my uncle’s house in Dhaka and started studying again. From that time, I couldn’t sleep properly. I only had one thought – I must study at Begum Rokeya University. After admission, I finally slept peacefully.”
Reactions from Friends and Teachers
Her friend Samiel Sami said:
“Others may think leaving so many opportunities and waiting again is risky. But Rokeya wanted to connect herself with the university of her name. This is undoubtedly a historic decision.”
A teacher of Public Administration Department, Saiful Islam, said:
“Leaving so many good options just to study at the university of her name is a very brave decision. If she keeps this courage, Rokeya can truly become a real Rokeya in the future.”
