Rolls-Royce Crashes in Dhaka

An unprecedented incident, Bangladesh recorded what is believed to be its most expensive road accident to date, when a Rolls-Royce Spectre, valued at approximately Tk 15 crore (around $1.25 million), was severely damaged in a high-speed crash on the Purbachal Expressway around 2:30 PM on Saturday(19 July).

How this incident occurred?

The ultra-luxury electric vehicle, owned by Abdur Sabur, Chairman of Masko Group, lost control and collided forcefully with a concrete road island, leaving the front end of the car completely destroyed and four occupants injured. The accident has drawn  extensive public attention and sparked intense discussion across social media platforms.

According to Md Tariqul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Rupganj Police Station, the car had no number plate and only showed an ‘AFR’ sign (Applied for Registration). He said the car was completely damaged in front and speed may have been a major reason for the crash.

Among those injured was Sabur’s son, who sustained serious injuries and was immediately took them to Evercare Hospital in Dhaka. The remaining three passengers got minor to moderate injuries and are also undergoing treatment. Their identities have not yet been released also family notification is pending.

Eyewitnesses reported that the Rolls-Royce Spectre, famed for its 577-horsepower electric engine and fast acceleration, appeared to be driving above the speed limit at the time of the crash. The high-speed impact caused severe damage to the car’s chassis, with debris scattered across the Purbachal Expressway, attracting immediate public attention.

Police arrived at the spot and shortly after the incident and have since towed the destroy vehicle for further examination. Officer-in-Charge Md Tariqul Islam stated,

“Speeding seems to have played a significant role in the severity of the crash. We are looking into all possible factors, including road conditions and driver error.”

At this time, no legal action or charges have been formally announced.

The incident quickly went viral on social media, with many users calling it “Bangladesh’s most expensive car accident.” Popular Facebook page BD CarZz shared photos of the destroy Rolls-Royce Spectre, highlighting its estimated value and urging followers to pray for the injured. The rarity of the vehicle and the scale of the damage sparked  extensive public curiosity and concern.

A Rare and Iconic Vehicle

The Rolls-Royce Spectre, launched globally in 2023, is the brand’s first all-electric luxury car. Known for its sleek design, advanced engineering, and road dominance, the Spectre starts at over $420,000 worldwide. In Bangladesh, high import duties have pushed its value to around Tk 15 crore, making it a rare sight on the country’s roads.

This unfortunate event has brought attention to the dangers of high-speed driving and raised important questions about road safety, driver responsibility, and the need for stricter regulations concerning the operation of ultra-luxury vehicles in Bangladesh.
