Islamic Attire Protest at Rajshahi University
Dr. Md. Moniruzzaman, Assistant Professor of the Arabic Department at Rajshahi University (RU), attended his class on Tuesday morning (October 28) wearing Islamic attire and carrying a copy of the Holy Qur’an. His action was a symbolic protest against the controversial comments made by another RU professor regarding hijab.

Background of the Controversy
The controversy began when Professor A. A. Mamun from the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism made a Facebook post on Monday night, mocking female student representatives of RAKSU and Hall Council for wearing hijab during their oath-taking ceremony.
In his post, Professor Mamun wrote:
“এই ব্যক্তিগত স্বাধীনতা আমি এন্ডর্স করছি। কাল আমি এরকম ব্যক্তিগত স্বাধীনতা পরে ও হাতে নিয়ে ক্লাসে যাবো। পরবো টু-কোয়ার্টার, আর হাতে থাকবে মদের বোতল। মদ তো ড্রাগ না! মদ পান করার লাইসেন্সও আমার আছে! শিবির আইসেন, সাংবাদিকরাও আইসেন!”
Translation: “I endorse this personal freedom. Tomorrow, I’ll also go to class expressing my personal freedom — I’ll wear two-quarter pants and carry a bottle of alcohol in my hand. Alcohol isn’t a drug, and I have a drinking license! Let Shibir and journalists come!”
The post quickly spread on social media and drew heavy criticism. Following the backlash, Professor Mamun later expressed regret for his remarks.

RU Professor Dr. Moniruzzaman’s Peaceful Protest
In response to this controversy, Dr. Moniruzzaman arrived at his class on Tuesday morning dressed in traditional Islamic clothing, holding the Holy Qur’an to demonstrate religious respect and freedom.
He explained his action by saying:
“যে ধর্ম পালন করুক সে তার ধর্মের পোশাকের বিষয়ে স্বাধীন। তিনি যদি হিন্দু হন তাহলে তিনি ধুতি পরে ক্লাসে যাবেন এ ব্যাপারে আমার কোনো ঘৃণা বা বিদ্বেষ থাকবে না। আমি একজন মুসলমান হিসাবে ইসলামিক বিধান অনুযায়ী আমার পোশাক, ধর্মগ্রন্থ নিয়ে ক্লাসে যাব এমন স্বাধীনতা প্রতিটা মানুষের আছে।”
Translation: “Everyone is free to wear the clothing of their own religion. If someone is Hindu and wears a dhoti to class, I would have no hatred or objection. As a Muslim, I have the right to follow Islamic teachings and attend class with my religious attire and the Qur’an. Every person deserves this freedom.”

Calling for Respect and Responsibility
RU Professor Dr. Moniruzzaman also emphasized that teachers should act responsibly as they are seen as the moral conscience of society.
He said:
“শিক্ষককে সমাজের বিবেক মানা হয় তাদের কাছ থেকে এরকম কাজ প্রত্যাশা করা যায় না। শুধু বাংলাদেশ কেন বিশ্বের কোনো শিক্ষাপ্রতিষ্ঠানে একজন শিক্ষক মদ নিয়ে ক্লাসে যাবেন এটার অনুমোদন দেয় না। আমি সেই শিক্ষকের দৃষ্টিভঙ্গির প্রতিবাদ করছি। তাই আমি নিজে আমার ইসলামিক পোশাক এবং ধর্মগ্রন্থ আল-কোরআন নিয়ে ক্লাস নিতে এসেছি।”
Translation: “Teachers are considered the conscience of society, and such behaviour is not expected from them. No educational institution in Bangladesh or anywhere in the world allows a teacher to bring alcohol into class. I protested that teacher’s viewpoint, so I came to class in Islamic dress with the Holy Qur’an.”
