On the night of Friday, January 10, Mehedi Hasan, a student of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET), was found dead in his hostel room. The Urban and Regional Planning (URP) department 2018-19 student was found hanging around 11:00 PM in his room at the Ebela Hostel in the Fudkipara area of Rajshahi city.
Police soon recovered the body and took it to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) for autopsy. Authorities are investigating the cause of death, but initial reports indicate that he may have committed suicide.
Mehedi was unable to pass one subject while his batchmates had graduated, and this has been bothering him. This disappointment — combined with mental health issues he was already experiencing — is said to have pushed him to despair. Mehedi had been consulting a mental health specialist, according to RUET’s Student Advisor, Rabiul Islam Sarkar, but his problems persisted.
His family has been notified and the police plan to await additional information from the post-mortem report before taking any further steps. The university said it was mourning to loss such a promising student.
