High Court Issues Rule Seeking Not Declaring Dr. Yunus as 'National Reformer'

The High Court has issued a rule asking why Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser of the Interim Government, has not been declared a ‘National Reformer.’

On Monday (July 14), after the initial hearing of a writ petition, the High Court bench led by Justice Fahmida Kader issued the rule.

At the same time, the court also issued a rule seeking the reason why martyrs of the July movement such as Abu Saeed, Mir Mugh, Wasim Akram, and others have not been declared ‘National Heroes.’

The rule names the Secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration, Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Cabinet Secretary, Secretary of the Ministry of Law, Secretary of the Ministry of Information, and Secretary of the Ministry of Finance as respondents.

Advocate Muhammad Ali Jinnah appeared for the petitioner during the hearing, while Assistant Attorney General Ikramul Kabir represented the state.

Last year in July, a movement demanding reform of the quota system in government jobs began and gradually turned violent. Protesters were killed one after another in firing by government forces and attacks by ruling party activists.

The death of Abu Sayed, who was shot in the chest in Rangpur, spread the movement nationwide. On the same day, student league leader Wasim was killed by police firing in Chittagong.

In Uttara, Dhaka, Mir Mugh lost his life while distributing water among protesters. Before his death, his humanitarian call, “Does anyone need water,” spread widely on social media and left a deep mark in people’s hearts.

It is noted that over a thousand people lost their lives during the continuous movement that lasted until August 5. They are remembered as the ‘July Martyrs.’ The High Court has now issued a rule regarding their declaration as ‘National Heroes.’
