Member of Parliament Rumin Farhana returned home with a bitter experience after buying clothes from an Aarong showroom on Jasimuddin Road in Uttara, Dhaka.
She bought clothes for her mother but expressed anger after being told that she would not receive a shopping bag unless she paid extra. As a result, she carried the clothes by hand while leaving the store.
A photo showing her coming down the stairs while holding several pieces of clothing later spread on Facebook, triggering discussion and criticism online.
Facebook Post by Personal Assistant
The issue first became public after a Facebook post by her personal assistant, Zakir Hossain Shuvo, on Saturday (14 March).
Sharing the photo, he wrote:
“আজ একজন সংসদ সদস্যের সঙ্গে যা হলো তা নিয়ে লিখতে বাধ্য হলাম। আড়ং থেকে কেনাকাটা করতে গিয়ে এর আগেও বহুবার এমন অভিজ্ঞতা হয়েছিল। কিন্তু আজ অদ্ভুত অভিজ্ঞতার মুখোমুখি হলাম। একজন সংসদ সদস্যকে এতটুকো সম্মান দেখানো উচিত ছিল তাদের।”
Translation: “Today I felt compelled to write about what happened to a Member of Parliament. We have experienced such situations several times while shopping at Aarong before, but today it was a strange experience. They should have shown at least some respect to a Member of Parliament.”
He further wrote:
“আমরা গ্রাহকরা টাকা দিয়ে পণ্য কিনবো। কিন্তু সেই পণ্য বহন করার জন্য একটি সাধারণ শপিং ব্যাগও পাবো না, এটা কেমন নিয়ম? পরিবেশ রক্ষার কথা বলে যদি শপিং ব্যাগ বন্ধ করা হয়, তাহলে বিকল্প ব্যবস্থাও তো থাকতে হবে। কিন্তু এখানে দেখা যাচ্ছে, গ্রাহকের সুবিধার চেয়ে নিয়ম চাপিয়ে দেওয়াটাই যেন বেশি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ হয়ে গেছে। একটা ব্র্যান্ড যখন মানুষের ভালোবাসা আর আস্থার ওপর দাঁড়িয়ে থাকে, তখন সেই ব্র্যান্ডের দায়িত্বও থাকে গ্রাহকের প্রতি সম্মান দেখানোর। আমি মনে করি, গ্রাহকের ন্যূনতম সম্মান নিশ্চিত করা প্রতিটি প্রতিষ্ঠানের দায়িত্ব। বিষয়টি নিয়ে সংশ্লিষ্ট কর্তৃপক্ষের দৃষ্টি আকর্ষণ করছি। গ্রাহকের কষ্ট যেন অবহেলার বিষয় না হয়, সেই বিষয়টিও গুরুত্ব দিয়ে দেখতে হবে।”
Translation: “We, the customers, pay money to buy products. But we will not even get a simple shopping bag to carry them—what kind of rule is this? If shopping bags are stopped in the name of protecting the environment, there should be an alternative arrangement. But here it seems that imposing rules has become more important than customer convenience. When a brand stands on people’s love and trust, it also has a responsibility to respect its customers. I believe ensuring minimum respect for customers is the duty of every institution. I request the concerned authorities to look into the matter so that customers’ difficulties are not ignored.”

Rumin Farhana Explains What Happened
Speaking to reporters, Rumin Farhana, MP from the Brahmanbaria-2 constituency (Sarail–Ashuganj and part of Bijoynagar), described the incident.
She said:
“আজ ইফতারের পর উত্তরার জসীমউদ্দীন রোডের আড়ং-এর শোরুমে যাই। মায়ের জন্য চারটি কাপড় কিনি। কাউন্টারে যাওয়ার পর সাড়ে চার হাজার টাকার বিল ধরিয়ে দিয়ে কোনও ব্যাগ ছাড়াই কাপড় বুঝিয়ে দেয়। কাউন্টার থেকে বলা হয়, কাপড় নেওয়ার ব্যাগের জন্য অতিরিক্ত ৪০ টাকা দিতে হবে।”
Translation: “After iftar today, I went to the Aarong showroom on Jasimuddin Road in Uttara. I bought four pieces of clothing for my mother. At the counter, they handed me a bill of about 4,500 taka and gave the clothes without any bag. They said I would have to pay an additional 40 taka for a bag.”
She added:
“তখন প্রশ্ন করি, কেন কাপড়ের জন্য অতিরিক্ত ৪০ টাকা দিতে হবে? অদ্ভুত কথা। এ নিয়ে ক্ষোভ প্রকাশ করে কাপড়গুলো হাতে করে নিয়ে বাসায় আসি।”
Translation: “I asked why I should pay an extra 40 taka for a bag for the clothes. It sounded strange. I expressed my anger and brought the clothes home in my hands.”
Why She Went to Aarong
The MP also explained that she went to Aarong specifically to buy maxi dresses for her mother, as the size available there matches her mother’s needs.
She said:
“মায়ের জন্য ম্যাক্সি কাপড় কিনতেই আড়ংয়ে যেতে হয়েছিল। কারণ মায়ের যে ম্যাক্সির মাপ তা আড়ংয়ের সঙ্গে মিলে যায়। অন্য দোকানে মিল পাওয়া যায় না। সে কারণে আড়ংয়ে যাওয়া। না হলে জীবনেও আড়ংয়ে যেতাম না। আমি নিজের জন্য কোনোদিন আড়ং থেকে কাপড় কিনি নাই।”
Translation: “I had to go to Aarong to buy maxi dresses for my mother because the size available there matches her size. I do not find that size in other shops. Otherwise, I would never have gone to Aarong. I have never bought clothes from Aarong for myself.”
Attempts were made to contact the Aarong showroom on Jasimuddin Road in Uttara for comments. However, multiple calls to the store’s telephone number were not answered.
