Sylhet Has More Sacrificial Animals Than Needed This Eid-ul-Azha
Sylhet is well-prepared for this year’s Eid-ul-Azha with more sacrificial animals available than needed, according to officials. The local livestock market is seeing a surplus, and farmers across the division are confident that there will be no shortage during the holy festival.
The Department of Livestock has shared that over 308,000 animals including cattle, goats, sheep, and buffaloes are ready for sacrifice across Sylhet. But the actual demand is only around 271,500, which means supply is more than enough to meet everyone’s needs.
“There’s absolutely no reason to worry,” said a local official from the Livestock Department, as reported by UNB. “Farmers and families have raised a good number of animals, and as always, many more will arrive from nearby districts.”

In recent years, many expatriates from Sylhet have shown a growing interest in sacrificing large bulls during Eid. Though the local market doesn’t have a huge number of such large animals, districts like Kishoreganj, Netrokona, Mymensingh, and Kushtia usually fill that gap and the same is expected this year.
Here is a breakdown of the animals prepared for the festival:
-
130,756 bulls
-
32,368 oxen
-
37,392 cows
-
5,420 buffaloes
-
77,646 goats
-
24,014 sheep
-
919 other animals
Dr Maruf Hasan the Director of the Divisional Livestock Office, explained, “We’ve estimated a demand of around 271,500 animals in the Sylhet division. But the real number may be slightly lower. In contrast, farmers have already prepared over 308,000 animals. So, we’re confident there won’t be any shortage this Eid.”
Another positive sign this year is the increased availability of local and farm-raised animals. This has reduced the need to rely on animals coming from distant districts or foreign imports and making the market more self-sufficient and stable.
So, whether you’re looking for a cow, goat or even a large bull, Sylhet is fully prepared to meet your needs. With such an abundant supply, Eid-ul-Azha in the region promises to be smooth and stress-free for everyone.
