On Sunday, journalist Zahidul Islam of Amar Desh was reportedly blocked, had his phone and ID taken away, and was beaten inside the BNP office in Gulshan.
DUCSU Vice President Abu Sadik Kayem reacted strongly, saying:
“সাংবাদিক ও গণমাধ্যমের উপর এধরণের নগ্ন হস্তক্ষেপ গণতন্ত্র ও মুক্তমতচর্চার জন্য হুমকিস্বরূপ।”
Translation: “Such blatant interference with journalists and the media is a threat to democracy and free expression.”

Sadik Kayem also condemned the dismissal of RTV sub-editor Mahfuz Uddin Khan, stating:
“তথ্য ও মত প্রকাশের যে স্বাধীনতার জন্য আমরা এত রক্ত দিলাম, সেই আত্মত্যাগকে বৃদ্ধাঙ্গুলি দেখিয়ে এবং রাজনৈতিক পক্ষপাতদুষ্ট আচরণ ও সাংবাদিকদেরকে শত্রু মনে করার ফ্যাসিবাদী সংস্কৃতি ফিরিয়ে আনার মাধ্যমে পুনরায় গণমাধ্যমের কণ্ঠরোধ করার অপপ্রয়াস দেখতে পাচ্ছি।”
Translation: “I see an attempt to suppress media voices again by disrespecting the sacrifices made for freedom of information and expression, reviving a fascist culture that treats journalists as enemies.”
“সাধারণডিমবিক্রিকরেআমরাকীভাবে ১৫ লক্ষকাস্টমারএনেছি—এইবইয়েআছেতারবাস্তবকাহিনি!”
Kayem warned that anyone reviving the leftover authoritarian practices of the past will be seen by the new generation as enemies of the country and democracy.
“আওয়ামী লীগের ফেলে যাওয়া উচ্ছিষ্ট ফ্যাসিবাদী সংস্কৃতির হাল ধরার চেষ্টা যে বা যারাই করবেন, নতুন প্রজন্মের কাছে তারা দেশ ও গণতন্ত্রের শত্রু হিসেবেই পরিগণিত হবেন।”
Translation: “Whoever tries to carry forward the leftover fascist culture left behind by the Awami League will be regarded by the new generation as enemies of the country and democracy.”
