Recently, a student of Dhaka University (DU) and a leader of the student wing of BNP, SM Shahriar Alam Samya, was brutally murdered by outsiders with a knife at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital. A case has been filed in connection with the incident, and an investigation is currently underway.
However, Barrister Rumeen Farhana BNP’s Assistant International Affairs Secretary and former Member of Parliament has claimed that Samya was actually shot dead.
She made this statement while joining a talk show on an Indian television channel via video link. When the host of the show asked about the current situation in Bangladesh, Rumeen highlighted two recent mugging incidents and Samya’s killing as examples to explain the law-and-order situation. A video clip of her participation in the show is now circulating widely on social media.
During the talk show, Rumeen Farhana said that “Let me tell you two incidents. In the heart of Dhaka Moghbazar just yesterday or the day before, a mugging took place in broad daylight where the victim was attacked with a machete. It was all caught on CCTV.”
Speaking about Shahriar Alam Samya, a student of the Institute of Education and Research at Dhaka University, she also claimed that “Samya was shot dead at point-blank range.”
She added that “Just today, a businessman was shot and robbed of 2.2 million taka. These are just three incidents from the past couple of days—all within Dhaka city. I’m not even mentioning what’s happening outside Dhaka. I’m bringing these up because they’re already widely discussed, and your channel might be interested. But things like this are happening every day.”
Meanwhile, her remarks on Indian media have sparked both debate and criticism on social media.

A Facebook user named Shahjahan Shuvo shared the talk show video and reacted by saying:
“Look at Rumeen Farhana’s smile! She looks kind of embarrassed! And rightly so, don’t you think? That smart Indian anchor asked a question, and of course she didn’t want to disappoint him! So, in the heat of emotion, she blurted out all sorts of things who cares, right? This country runs on thin air anyway! While everyone’s busy talking about land plots, they’re ignoring what she really wanted. A land plot is nothing compared to that! Trying to impress the presenter, she mixed everything up and gave out wrong information—claiming Samya was shot at point-blank range and there was a machete mugging in Moghbazar. Both statements are factually incorrect. But by the end of the interview, she seemed very relaxed. At least she got to speak freely to someone from another country. You passed, Rumeen Farhana!”
Another user, Rukunuzzaman Pias, commented that “The things Rumeen Farhana said on Indian television are the same things India and pro-government propagandists have been saying for a long time.”
