The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has confirmed that scrap metal trader Lal Chan alias Sohag was killed in front of Mitford Hospital (Sir Salimullah Medical College) in the capital due to a business dispute.
Lalbagh Division Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mohammad Jasim Uddin gave this information at a press conference organized at the DMP Media Center on Saturday. The deceased Lal Chan alias Sohag was a scrap metal trader by profession. Although his village home was in Barisal, he lived in Keraniganj, Dhaka. It is known that he was once involved in Jubo Dal politics, but his current political affiliation could not be confirmed.
DC Jasim said,
গত ৯ জুলাই বিকেল ৫টা ৪০ মিনিট থেকে ৬টার মধ্যে কোতোয়ালি থানান স্যার সলিমুল্লাহ মেডিকেল কলেজ (মিটফোর্ড) হাসপাতালের ৩ নম্বর গেটের সামনে এবং সংলগ্ন এলাকায় একটি নৃশংস হত্যাকাণ্ড ঘটে। বহু লোক একত্রিত হয়ে মো. সোহাগকে নির্মমভাবে আঘাত করে হত্যা করে। ঘটনার খবর পেয়ে তাৎক্ষণিকভাবে পুলিশ ঘটনাস্থলে পৌঁছায় এবং সেখান থেকেই দুইজনকে গ্রেপ্তার করে। পরে মরদেহ উদ্ধার করে ময়নাতদন্তের জন্য মিটফোর্ড হাসপাতালে পাঠানো হয়।
Translation: On July 9, between 5:40 pm and 6 pm, a brutal murder took place in front of Gate No. 3 of Kotwali Thana Sir Salimullah Medical College (Mitford) Hospital and the adjacent area. Many people gathered and brutally beat Md. Sohag to death. Upon receiving the news of the incident, the police immediately reached the spot and arrested two people from there. Later, the body was recovered and sent to Mitford Hospital for autopsy.
He further said,
“আমরা জানতে পেরেছি, যারা এই হত্যাকাণ্ডে জড়িত এবং যিনি মারা গেছেন, তারা আগে একসঙ্গে কাজ করতেন। পরবর্তীকালে আলাদা হয়ে গেলে দ্বন্দ্ব তৈরি হয়। আর সে দ্বন্দ্বের জেরেই এই মর্মান্তিক ঘটনা ঘটে।”
Translation: “We have learned that those involved in this murder and the deceased used to work together. Later, when they separated, a conflict arose. And this tragic incident occurred because of that conflict.”
DC Jasim said that the police have not received any information about extortion in connection with the murder,
“এটি ছিল একান্তই ব্যক্তিগত ও ব্যবসায়িক দ্বন্দ্ব। কোনো প্রাতিষ্ঠানিক চাঁদাবাজি বা সংঘবদ্ধ অপরাধচক্রের সংশ্লিষ্টতার তথ্য নেই।”
Translation: “This was purely a personal and business conflict. There is no evidence of institutionalized extortion or involvement of organized crime.”
The day after the murder, on July 10, the elder sister of the deceased Sohag filed a murder case at the Kotwali Police Station. After that, investigators identified the suspects by analyzing CCTV footage. A total of five people have been arrested so far, two of whom were arrested by the RAB and the remaining three by the Kotwali Police Station. The police said that a thorough investigation into the incident is underway and the operation to arrest the other involved parties is continuing.
