Senior journalist and columnist Bibhuranjan Sarkar (71), who went missing on Thursday, was found dead in the Meghna River at Gazaria in Munshiganj. Police recovered the body and sent it for autopsy. Initial investigation suggests he died a day earlier. There were no injury marks on his body.
Body Recovered from Meghna River
On Friday afternoon, police found the floating body of journalist Bibhuranjan Sarkar in the Meghna River at Char Balakia area of Gazaria’s Kalagachhia.
Naval police recovered the body and later sent it to Munshiganj General Hospital morgue for post-mortem.
Police Confirmation
Ramna Division’s Deputy Commissioner of Police, Masud Alam, confirmed the recovery to the media.
He said:
“The body of Bibhuranjan Sarkar has been recovered. His family members are on their way to the spot. How he ended up there and the reason for his death are under investigation.”

Condition of the Body
Alamgir Hossain, Police Superintendent of Narayanganj Naval Police region, said that the journalist’s death likely occurred a day earlier.
He explained:
“The body has started to decompose slightly. There are no injury marks. The exact cause of death will be known after autopsy.”
Eyewitness Account of Recovery
Kalagachhia Naval Police Outpost in-charge, Md. Saleh Ahmed Pathan, described how the body was recovered.
He said:
“Around 2 pm we received information that a body was floating in Meghna River near Char Balakia. At 3 pm we reached the spot with a trawler and recovered the body.”
He also added:
“Later, the face of the deceased was matched with photos shown by journalists, and it was confirmed to be Bibhuranjan Sarkar. Ramna police and his family have been informed.”
Pathan further mentioned:
“During the preparation of the inquest report, no injury marks were found on the body. His spectacles were still hanging around his neck.”
Police Investigation
Ramna Police Inspector (Investigation), Tarikul Islam, said that Bibhuranjan’s son Ritu Sarkar filed a General Diary (GD) on Thursday night.
He added:
“Since he left home without his mobile phone, it was not possible to trace his last location through technology. Police are collecting CCTV footage to analyze his movement. Other sources are also being checked for information.”
Disappearance Before Death
According to police, Bibhuranjan Sarkar left home on Thursday morning telling his family he was going to his workplace at the office of Ajker Patrika in Banasree. However, investigations revealed that he never reached there. His mobile phone was left at home.
Sources at Ajker Patrika also said that he had been on a seven-day leave since August 16.
Earlier, in one of his writings, Bibhoranjan Sarkar had expressed,
“Today, when I look at my own life, I feel—living by writing the truth is not easy.”
Family’s Concern
His younger brother, Chiranjan Sarkar, wrote on Facebook Thursday night:
“My elder brother, journalist Bibhuranjan Sarkar, left home at 10 am on Thursday like other days saying he would go to the office (Ajker Patrika). Later we found out that he didn’t go to the office, nor did he visit anyone he knew. Nobody saw him today. Until 1 am at night, he did not return home.”
