The long-debated decision on a separate university for the seven government colleges affiliated with Dhaka University has finally been made. The new institution will be called Dhaka Central University. A 32-member student representative team participated in a discussion at University Grants Commission (UGC) which concluded the decision on Sunday (March 16).
However, the naming process wasn’t without disagreements. The students were divided into two groups—17 representatives supported the name Dhaka Central University, while others strongly opposed it. Those against the name argued that Dhaka College was once known as Dhaka Central College, and they preferred Federal University instead. To resolve the dispute, UGC allowed the students to discuss among themselves before making a final decision. After deliberation, they agreed on Dhaka Central University.

Earlier, on March 13, UGC announced a meeting to discuss the naming process. Md. Jamal Uddin, Deputy Director of Public Universities at UGC, issued the notice, inviting student leaders from the seven colleges to share their opinions. The meeting, held on March 16 at 10 AM, aimed to establish a separate institutional framework for the colleges, equivalent to a university. The creation of Dhaka Central University is an exciting new chapter for the seven colleges, giving them their own unique identity. This change brings a lot of hope for students and faculty, promising a more vibrant and connected academic community moving forward.
