Shakib Al Hasan Becomes the First Player with 7000 Runs and 500 T20 Wickets

Shakib Al Hasan

Bangladesh allrounder Shakib Al Hasan has reached another historic milestone in his cricket career by taking his 500th T20 wicket. He is now the fifth bowler in the world to achieve this feat and the only cricketer ever to complete the double of 7000 runs and 500 wickets in T20 cricket.

Shakib Enters the 500-Wicket Club

Shakib Al Hasan created history on August 24, 2025, during a CPL match between Antigua and Barbuda Falcons and St Kitts and Nevis Patriots at North Sound.

Coming into the game with 499 wickets, Shakib needed just one more to complete the landmark. In the 15th over, he almost had it when Jayden Seales took a boundary catch, but replays showed the fielder had touched the cushion, and it was ruled a six.

But Shakib did not have to wait long. In the same over, he dismissed Mohammad Rizwan with a return catch, sealing his place in cricket history as the fifth man to reach 500 T20 wickets.

He didn’t stop there – in his next over, he struck twice more, finishing the match with 502 wickets.

Elite Bowlers with 500+ Wickets

Shakib now joins an exclusive list of bowlers with 500 or more T20 wickets:

  • Rashid Khan – 660

  • Dwayne Bravo – 631

  • Sunil Narine – 590

  • Imran Tahir – 554

  • Shakib Al Hasan – 502

Unique Double: 7000 Runs and 500 Wickets

What makes Shakib different from the others is his all-round excellence. He is the only player in T20 history to achieve the double of 7000+ runs and 500 wickets.

The closest was Dwayne Bravo with 6970 runs and 631 wickets. Andre Russell has already scored 9361 runs but is still chasing 500 wickets, standing at 487.

Record-Breaking Awards and Achievements

Shakib’s career is also decorated with several other records:

  • Most Player of the Series awards in T20s – 9, ahead of Virat Kohli (8) and Wanindu Hasaranga (7).

  • Five five-wicket hauls in T20s, the most by any spinner. This places him second overall with Lasith Malinga, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Imran Tahir, and Shaheen Shah Afridi, only behind David Wiese (7).

Memorable Spells

One of Shakib’s most famous performances came in CPL 2013, where he took 6 for 6 against Trinidad & Tobago Red Steel.

Later the same year, he took another six-wicket haul for Prime Bank Cricket Club in the Victory Day T20 Cup, becoming only the second bowler after Ajantha Mendis to take multiple six-wicket hauls in T20 cricket. This record was later matched by Arzan Nagwaswalla in 2023.

Economy and Control – Shakib’s Hidden Strength

Apart from wickets, Shakib’s ability to control runs makes him even more special. Out of 434 T20 innings where he bowled at least two overs, he kept runs to a run-a-ball or less 181 times (41.51%).

This puts him fourth best among 48 bowlers with 250+ innings, behind only:

  • Sunil Narine (53.69%)

  • Rashid Khan (46.86%)

  • Imad Wasim (44.74%)

This proves Shakib is not only a wicket-taker but also one of the best at keeping batters under pressure.
