Ekramul Hasan Shakil has made history by becoming the seventh person from Bangladesh to successfully climb Mount Everest. But his achievement is more than just making it to the top; he achieved something even more amazing. He hiked the furthest from sea level to Everest in the fastest time ever recorded.
The “Sea to Summit” Expedition
His journey, named “Sea to Summit,” began on February 25, 2025, from the Inani Beach in Cox’s Bazar, the southern tip of Bangladesh. From there, he walked over 1,300 kilometers through Bangladesh, India, and Nepal before reaching the top of the world.
Shakil reached the summit of Mount Everest—which stands at 29,031 feet (8,848 meters)—on Monday, May 19, within less than 90 days of starting his journey. This expedition was one of the most ambitious and physically demanding feats ever completed by a Bangladeshi.
Official Confirmation from the Expedition Team
The news of his successful summit was confirmed by Sadia Sultana Shampa, a member of the Bangla Mountaineering and Trekking Club (BMTC), which coordinated the expedition. She said:
“Shakil has set a world record by summiting Everest and returning safely to Camp 4. He started from the sea and walked over 1,300 kilometers to reach the peak in the fastest time. Due to poor internet and phone signals, we haven’t received the exact summit time, the names of others with him, or photos and videos yet. But the Everest base company has confirmed his success.”

Breaking a Previous World Record
Shakil’s feat is even more special because it broke a long-standing world record. In 1990, an Australian mountaineer named Tim Macartney-Snape walked around 1,200 kilometers from India’s Ganga Sagar to Everest in 96 days. Shakil not only walked a longer distance (1,300 km) but also did it about a week faster than the Australian climber.
Previous Experience and Training
Shakil is not new to walking long distances. In 2013, he walked from Kolkata to Dhaka in just 11 days. That experience inspired him to join the Bangla Mountaineering and Trekking Club, where he began his journey into serious mountaineering.
He received his basic and advanced mountaineering training from India’s Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, one of the top institutes in South Asia.
In 2015, Shakil was part of a Bangladeshi mountaineering team led by M A Muhit that became the first from Bangladesh to summit Kayajo Ri, a peak standing at 20,290 feet. That expedition included seven climbers, and Shakil was one of them.
Additional Highlights and Accomplishments
Shakil has successfully ascended several significant Himalayan summits in addition to Everest and Kayajo Ri, including:
- Draupadi Ka Danda-2
- Himlung
- Dolma Kang
Previous Bangladeshi Everest Climbers
Before Ikramul Hasan Shakil, the following Bangladeshis had reached the summit of Mount Everest:
- Musa Ibrahim
- Nishat Majumder
- M A Muhit
- Wasfia Nazreen
- Khaled Hossain
- Babar Ali
