Canadian football player Shamit Shome has now vowed to represent Bangladesh internationally. Born on September 5, 1997, in Edmonton, Alberta, to Bangladeshi parents originating in Sylhet and Dhaka, Shome considers his journey from Canadian football fields to the heart of the Bangladesh national side a testament to the very strong affection he has for the land of his heritage.
Shome began his football life in Edmonton Southwest United SC prior to breaking into the professional ranks in FC Edmonton in the year 2016. His performances caught the attention ofMLS side Montreal Impact when he was signed by the club for three seasons between the years 2017 to 2020 and made 45 appearances and a single goal. At the international level, Shome played for Canada youth and earned two caps for the senior national side in 2020. However, the desire to play for his Bangladeshi heritage prompted him to begin the process to switch national loyalties. In April 2025, he announced that he would play for Bangladesh in the future, and on May 6 obtained FIFA permission to do so.
Shome’s appointment was welcomed by the fans and the Bangladesh Football Federation alike, both of whom have faith that he will add immensely to the national side’s midfield force. His cross-continent blend of North American coaching and deep cultural roots makes him a continental bridge, and in including him the national side will get a new vision. When Shome dons the red and the green jersey, he does not only fulfill a personal aspiration but also inspires a new generation of dual-heritage players to embrace their heritage. His life is a testament to the power of sport to unite people and the enormous significance of not losing sight of one’s roots.
