History Takes a Turn: Sheikh Hasina Faces Trial in the Very Tribunal She Created

No one ever imagined that the woman who once united a nation to bring war criminals to justice would one day have to stand trial in the same tribunal’s dock. A shocking and alarming charge sheet officially submitted to the International Crimes Tribunal has now been filed against Sheikh Hasina. It spans an astonishing 8,747 pages.

This accusation is not merely political, it marks a dark and disturbing stain on Bangladesh’s history, implicating her in crimes against humanity. A major change is happening in Bangladesh’s politics. The former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who once created the international tribunal to try war criminals, now stands accused in that same court of crimes against humanity.

This case is not ordinary. The charge sheet submitted to the tribunal is very large 8,747 pages long. It includes proof such as documents, audio and video recordings, phone call records, eyewitness statements, and detailed evidence.

Main Charges

The Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam said that there are five main charges in the case. Each charge has strong proof and witnesses.

The main charges are:

  1. Giving orders to kill people without any reason during protests

  2. Being involved in planned political violence

  3. Using police and government party groups to carry out attacks

  4. Encouraging crimes against innocent people

  5. Providing audio, video, and witness proof to support these charges

These charges are very serious and are considered crimes against humanity under international law.

The Bloodshed of the Monsoon Revolution

In July and August 2024, a large protest took place in Bangladesh, called the “Monsoon Revolution.” During this time, many innocent people, including students, women, workers, and intellectuals, were attacked by police and government supporters. These attacks were planned and organized at the highest levels. The Chief Prosecutor said over 1,400 people died in just two months. Many were shot, some showed signs of torture, and many disappeared without a trace.

Other Accused Officials

Besides Sheikh Hasina, two other top officials are accused:

  • Former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal

  • Former Police Chief Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun

They face the same five charges and are said to have played important roles in planning and carrying out the crimes. The prosecution chief Tajul Islam, said this trial is not about revenge. It is a promise for the future that such crimes will never happen again. He said justice will be served according to the law, and if the accused are found guilty, they will face the highest punishment.

What is in the Charge Sheet

The 8,747-page charge sheet contains:

  • Statements from victims’ families

  • Medical reports of those who died in hospitals

  • Audio recordings of phone calls with orders

  • CCTV footage and news videos from different places

  • Political speeches and government documents related to the attacks

It also says some forces were given permission to carry out attacks, and video proof of these attacks has been included. Sheikh Hasina is one of the longest-serving prime ministers in Bangladesh.
