The former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is one of the 97 people’s passports that the government has canceled. Her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, and five former chiefs of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) are also there on the list along with her.
The government has accused these men of being involved in disappearances, killings and incidents during the protests that gripped the country in July and August. It’s a consequential decision, one that has drawn attention within the country and outside of it.
Deputy Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad Muzzumder also confirmed that Sheikh Hasina’s passport had been cancelled and said the Indian government had been informed of this. She is presently in India so a travel document was issued to her by the Indian authorities instead. It also contains powerhouses in the ruling Awami League, such as Obaidul Quader and A. K. M. Mozammel Haque, among others.
This thing indicates the strong position of the government against whom it finds responsible for the chaos during the protest in this country. It sends a signal about holding those people accountable, and the government’s commitment to keeping the peace in the country.
