Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s residence comes under attack in rising tension in Dhanmondi

DHAKA, FEBRUARY 5: A group of protesters attacked the residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, founder of Bangladesh, at Dhanmondi 32 in Dhaka, at about 8.00 PM today. Eyewitnesses reported that some parts of the building were set aflame, with flames rising from the site.

The attack came on the heels of an escalation of tension, as a “Bulldozer Procession” was to be held later in the evening. Announcements on social media stated that the procession would follow a 9:00 PM virtual session at which the deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was expected to address the banned student group, Chhatra League.

Eyewitnesses reported that while chanting slogans such as “Azadi, Azadi,” “Nara e Takbeer,” and “Dhaka, Not Delhi,” some people also wrote graffiti on the building. Among the inscriptions was the phrase, “32 No More.”.

Anxiety has spread among the residents throughout the city, as an investigation is underway to ascertain the extent of the damage and the motive behind the attack.
