Hyderabad MP and AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has said that if India really wants to send back “illegal Bangladeshis,” then it should first start by sending back former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is currently living in India after losing power in 2024. Owaisi strongly criticized the government for targeting Bengali-speaking people in India as “Bangladeshis” without proper checks and also urged India to accept the people’s revolution in Bangladesh and build good relations with its new government.
Owaisi Targets Sheikh Hasina’s Stay in India
Speaking at The Indian Express “Idea Exchange” program, Asaduddin Owaisi said:
“If the government really wants to send back illegal Bangladeshis, then let them start by sending back Sheikh Hasina. Why are we keeping this ousted leader here? Send her back. Isn’t she a Bangladeshi?”
He pointed out that Sheikh Hasina fled to India after losing power on 5 August 2024 due to the student-people’s movement in Bangladesh and is still staying there.
India Must Accept Bangladesh’s People’s Revolution
Owaisi added that India should accept the recent political change in Dhaka and work towards building a strong relationship with the new government.

Bengali-Speaking Indians Being Harassed
Asaduddin Owaisi accused the authorities of unfair treatment of Bengali-speaking Indians by labelling them as Bangladeshis.
He said:
“In our country, there is a Bangladeshi (Hasina) who is causing problems with her statements. But on the other side, poor Bengali-speaking Indians from Malda and Murshidabad are being sent from Pune to Kolkata by plane and then abandoned near the neutral border area.”
Asaduddin Owaisi claimed these actions were done without proper verification.
“Speaking Bengali Doesn’t Make Someone Bangladeshi”
When asked about the situation, Owaisi replied:
“Does speaking Bengali automatically make someone Bangladeshi? This shows how much hatred is being spread here.”
Fear Created Across the Country
Owaisi further alleged that Bengali-speaking people are being targeted nationwide to spread fear.
He asked:
“What right does the police have to send these people to detention centers? Now everyone is acting like they are the law themselves.”
