On 28 October 2024, BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed made a strong remark about a tragic event that happened exactly 18 years ago. He was referring to the brutal incident of 28 October 2006, when political violence broke out in Dhaka involving activists of the Awami League.
He referred to the violent attacks that happened with logs and boat paddles (লগি-বৈঠা), where several people were killed during clashes between political parties in front of Baitul Mukarram Mosque.

Salahuddin strongly condemned the event and the role played by the Awami League at that time. He said that this incident is a reminder of the violent and deadly nature of political conflict in Bangladesh.
“মানুষকে সাপের মতো পিটিয়ে মারা। লাশের উপরে দাঁড়িয়ে নৃত্য করার ঐতিহ্য শুধু আওয়ামী লীগেরই আছে।”
“Beating people like snakes. Standing on dead bodies and dancing—this is a tradition that only the Awami League has.”
Salahuddin Ahmed’s comments were meant to criticize the culture of political violence and to hold Awami League responsible for what he called an “unforgivable crime” in the name of politics.
