Mohammad Sufiur Rahman is a name synonymous with dedication, diplomacy and hard work has been appointed as the Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser of Bangladesh interim government. With this new role in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs he will hold the rank and privileges of a State Minister, reflecting both his experience and the trust placed in him by the government.

Sufiur Rahman’s journey began with his entry into the ninth batch of the Bangladesh Civil Service (Foreign Affairs) cadre marking the start of what would become a remarkable career in diplomacy. Over the years, his service to the nation has been a testament to his commitment and determination to put Bangladesh on the global map.
Building Bridges
Early in his career Sufiur Rahman served in the High Commission of Bangladesh, New Delhi, and the High Commission of Bangladesh, Islamabad. These positions were critical as he played an active role in shaping Bangladesh’s relationships with its neighbors. His time in New Delhi as the First Secretary from 1995 to 1999 laid the foundation for future diplomatic successes. He worked tirelessly to deepen bilateral ties and ensure that Bangladesh’s voice was heard in South Asia.

A Voice at the United Nations
From 1999 to 2002 he represented Bangladesh as Counsellor at the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the United Nations in Geneva. In this role, he was at the heart of key international discussions. His contribution was not just in representing Bangladesh but in making sure its priorities to be it global trade, peace or human rights were firmly on the international agenda. His work in Geneva embodied his vision for a more connected and engaged Bangladesh on the world stage.
Pioneering Regional Cooperation: SAARC and Sri Lanka
His commitment to regional cooperation became even more evident when he served as Director at the SAARC Secretariat in Kathmandu. Here, he played a pivotal role in shaping South Asia’s regional strategies, helping to create stronger ties and mutual support among neighboring countries. Later, from 2012 to 2014, as High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Sufiur Rahman continued his mission of diplomacy, strengthening Bangladesh’s relations and promoting mutual growth.
Championing Bangladesh’s Interests Abroad
One of his most significant roles was as Ambassador to Myanmar, where he served from 2014 to 2017. During his tenure, he faced some of the most delicate issues, including the Rohingya crisis. Sufiur Rahman’s steady hand and unwavering commitment to Bangladesh’s values and interests during such a sensitive time earned him widespread recognition. Following Myanmar, he was appointed High Commissioner to Australia, where his leadership extended beyond diplomacy to fostering stronger trade and cultural ties.
A Legacy of Global Representation: Ambassador to Switzerland and the UN
In July 2023 he reached a new milestone in his career with his appointment as Ambassador to Switzerland and Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva. This role placed him at the center of global discussions, representing Bangladesh with unparalleled dedication. His work in Switzerland and Geneva showcased his lifelong mission to elevate Bangladesh’s voice in international forums, particularly focusing on sustainable development, human rights, and regional peace.
Leaving a Mark in Australia
During his time in Australia, Rahman went beyond formal diplomacy. In March 2023, he organized an exhibition showcasing rare photographs of President Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. This event was not just a commemoration but a call to the youth to understand their history and contribute to the vision of a prosperous Sonar Bangla. Sufiur Rahman also initiated the Joint Working Group with Australia, a crucial step in fostering stronger business ties between the two nations.
A Continued Commitment to Bangladesh
In March 2024, Sufiur Rahman’s journey with the United Nations came to an end with Ambassador Tareq Md Ariful Islam succeeding him as the Permanent Representative to the UN Office in Geneva. After his return to Bangladesh, Sufiur Rahman’s dedication didn’t waver. He is a Senior Research Fellow at the South Asian Institute of Policy and Governance at North South University, continuing to contribute to Bangladesh’s academic and diplomatic development.
According to the notification, under the Rules of Business 1996, Sufiur Rahman has been given executive authority to assist the Chief Adviser in foreign affairs. His appointment comes at a crucial time, aiming to strengthen Bangladesh’s diplomatic outreach during the interim period. This order takes immediate effect.
