Serious allegations of medical negligence have surfaced at Murshidabad Medical College Hospital in India. Doctors are accused of performing surgery on a completely healthy right leg, instead of the patient’s fractured left leg.
The patient, 75-year-old Renu Bibi, is a resident of Malopara area under Suti-2 block in Murshidabad district.
How the Injury Occurred
On Wednesday (17 December), Renu Bibi slipped while walking down the stairs at her home. She suffered a severe injury to her left hip joint, and the bone of her left leg reportedly broke into pieces.
She was immediately admitted to Murshidabad Medical College Hospital for treatment.

Doctors Recommended Surgery
After examination, doctors informed the family that surgery was the only option. With the family’s consent, the elderly woman was taken to the operation theatre.
Shocking Discovery After Surgery
The problem came to light after the surgery was completed. When the patient was brought out of the operation theatre, her family noticed that bandages were applied on her right leg, not the injured left one.
After regaining consciousness, the patient herself started shouting:
“ভুল করেছেন ভুল!”
Translation: “You have made a mistake! A mistake!”
Allegations Against the Medical Team
According to the family, the orthopedic surgeon performed the surgery on the healthy leg in the presence of nurses and OT assistants.
Once the error was realized, the patient was quickly taken back to the operation table, and traction was applied to the broken left leg instead of surgery.
Conflicting Claims by Hospital Authorities
A section of the hospital authorities claimed that both legs of the patient were fractured. However, the family strongly rejected this claim.
Their question was clear:
If the plan was to operate on the left leg, why was the right leg operated on?
They also raised concerns about how such a mistake could happen despite X-ray reports and physical examinations.
Family’s Reaction
A relative of the patient, Selim Malik, expressed shock and anger over the incident. Said,
“অপারেশন করার আগে তো খালি চোখেও দেখা যায় কোন পায়ে সমস্যা।”
Translation: “Even with the naked eye, one can see which leg has the problem before surgery.”
He added that it was impossible to understand how such a mistake could happen even after reviewing X-ray plates.
Hospital Authority Responds
The Acting Medical Superintendent of Murshidabad Medical College, Anadi Roy Chowdhury, said:
“So far, no written complaint has been submitted. However, we have received oral complaints.”
He further assured that the matter is being taken seriously and added that strict action will be taken if negligence or irresponsibility is proven.
