angladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed has said that the return of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman to Bangladesh will exceed all historical precedents of the past 55 years. He added that preparations are underway to ensure the day is remembered as an unparalleled moment in the country’s political history.
Speaking on Thursday (December 18) during an on-site inspection of the Dhaka airport area as part of the preparations for Tarique Rahman’s return, Salahuddin Ahmed stated that the occasion is being planned with extraordinary significance in mind.
He said,
“তারেক রহমানের স্বদেশ প্রত্যাবর্তন বিগত ৫৫ বছরের ইতিহাসের সব দৃষ্টান্ত ছাড়িয়ে যাবে।”
Translation: “Tarique Rahman’s return to the country will surpass all precedents of the last 55 years.”
Salahuddin Ahmed further remarked that the party hopes such a historic moment will not need to be repeated even in the next 55 years.
“আগামী ৫৫ বছরের ইতিহাসেও যেন এমন কোনো ঐতিহাসিক ঘটনা আর না ঘটে, সেভাবেই দিনটিকে স্মরণীয় করে রাখার আয়োজন চলছে।”
Translation: “Arrangements are being made so that this day is remembered in such a way that no similar historic event is needed even in the next 55 years.”
Referring to Tarique Rahman’s long exile, he said that after 17 years of hardship away from home, the BNP leader is finally returning to Bangladesh.
“দীর্ঘ ১৭ বছরের কষ্টের নির্বাসিত জীবন শেষে তারেক রহমান দেশে ফিরছেন।”
Translation: “After 17 years of a painful life in exile, Tarique Rahman is returning to the country.”
He described Tarique Rahman as a key figure in the struggle for democracy and a future leader of Bangladesh.
“এ দেশের গণতন্ত্রের রক্ষাকবচ এবং আগামী দিনে যিনি বাংলাদেশের নেতৃত্ব দেবেন।”
Translation: “He is the protector of democracy in this country and the one who will lead Bangladesh in the days ahead.”
Salahuddin Ahmed emphasized that Tarique Rahman led the democratic movement against fascism for nearly 16 to 17 years.
“এই ফ্যাসিবাদবিরোধী গণতান্ত্রিক রাজনৈতিক সংগ্রামে সুদীর্ঘ ১৬-১৭ বছর তিনি নেতৃত্ব দিয়েছেন।”
Translation: “He has led the democratic political struggle against fascism for a long 16 to 17 years.”

Responding to questions about Tarique Rahman’s arrival, Salahuddin Ahmed confirmed that he will return on a regular commercial flight operated by Biman Bangladesh Airlines.
“বাংলাদেশ বিমানের নিয়মিত বাণিজ্যিক ফ্লাইটে তারেক রহমান দেশে ফিরছেন।”
Translation: “Tarique Rahman is returning to the country on a regular commercial flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines.”
He added that the aircraft is scheduled to land in Dhaka at 11:55 AM. Regarding plans for a reception, the BNP leader said several locations are being considered, keeping public enthusiasm in mind.
“বাংলাদেশের জনগণ তাকে এক নজর দেখার জন্য ও কথা শোনার জন্য উন্মুখ হয়ে আছে।”
Translation: “The people of Bangladesh are eager to catch a glimpse of him and listen to his words.”
At the same time, he assured that public inconvenience would be avoided. He concluded by saying that potential venues are being inspected and the final decision will be announced once confirmed.
“জনদুর্ভোগ যাতে না হয়, সেটাও বিবেচনায় আছে।”
Translation: “Ensuring that there is no public suffering is also being taken into consideration.”
The return of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman is being framed by party leaders as a defining moment in Bangladesh’s contemporary political history. After nearly 17 years in exile, his homecoming is expected to carry strong symbolic weight for supporters who view him as a central figure in the country’s pro-democracy movement.
