Arrested content creator Towhid Afridi is suffering from cancer, his lawyer Khairul Islam said. During the court hearing on Monday (August 25), he said that Afridi also has kidney complications and his wife is pregnant. Although bail was sought on humanitarian grounds, the court rejected the bail and granted a five-day remand. Lawyer claims Afridi is suffering from cancer and kidney complications
Recently arrested content creator Towhid Afridi is suffering from cancer, his lawyer Khairul Islam has said. He informed reporters at the court premises on Monday (August 25).
Earlier, Khairul Islam told,
মামলার ঘটনার সঙ্গে আসামির কোনো সংশ্লিষ্টতা নেই। বাদীর অভিযোগ আওয়ামী লীগের নেতাকর্মী, আইনশৃঙ্খলা বাহিনী ও পুলিশের নির্বিচার গুলিতে ভিকটিম নিহত হন। এখানে আসামির কোনো ভূমিকা নেই।
Translation: The court that the accused had no connection with the incident in the case. The plaintiff alleged that the victim was killed in indiscriminate firing by Awami League leaders, law enforcement agencies and police. The accused had no role in this.
During the hearing, the lawyer further said,
আফ্রিদি কিডনি জটিলতায় ভুগছেন, তার চিকিৎসা চলমান। অতিরিক্ত হাঁটাচলায় তার প্রস্রাবে ব্লাড আসে। এ ছাড়া তার ওয়াইফ (স্ত্রী) প্রেগনেন্ট। মানবিক বিবেচনায় তার জামিন মঞ্জুর করা হোক।
Translation: Afridi is suffering from kidney complications, his treatment is ongoing. Due to excessive walking, blood comes in his urine. In addition, his wife is pregnant. He should be granted bail on humanitarian grounds.
Plaintiff’s position: Afridi is a ‘media terrorist’
Plaintiff’s lawyer Ibrahim Khalil, Additional Public Prosecutor Shamsuddoha Sumon and Dhaka Bar Senior Associate General Secretary Zahirul Hasan Mukul argued in favor of Afridi’s remand.
They claim that Afridi is an accused in the case. He went live on social media and encouraged the Awami League, Jubo League and Chhatra League to carry out a massacre against the protesters. Calling him a “media terrorist”, the lawyers said,
এই আসামি মামলায় এজাহারভুক্ত। তাকে মিডিয়া সন্ত্রাসী দাবি করে বলেন, এই আসামি লাইভে এসে আওয়ামী লীগ, যুবলীগ, ছাত্রলীগকে আন্দোলনকারীদের ওপর নারকীয় হত্যাকাণ্ড করতে উৎসাহিত করেন। তাকে রিমান্ডে নিলে জানা যাবে, কারা এ হত্যাকাণ্ডের সঙ্গে সম্পৃক্ত, কার কী নির্দেশনা ছিল। কারা অর্থদাতা ও অস্ত্রদাতা। এই আসামি ডিবির হারুনের সঙ্গে একাধিক লাইভ করেছেন।
Translation: This accused is a case filer. They claimed that he was a media terrorist and said that this accused came live and encouraged the Awami League, Jubo League, and Chhatra League to commit hellish murders on the protesters. Court’s decision
During the hearing, the accused argued that Afridi had posted in favor of the students during the movement, but he has no political affiliation. His father also does not hold any political office. In addition, considering the kidney complications, the court was asked for ambulance facilities. However, the court rejected his bail application and granted a five-day remand.
Emotional moment in court
During the hearing, Towhid Afridi was seen listening attentively to the hearing by holding onto the iron railing of the dock. On the way from the court premises to the jail, he was seen walking with his hands on his stomach. His shoes were lost in the crowd, and he was seen standing barefoot in front of the jail.
It is worth noting that on May 13, singer Mumtaz Begum also lost her shoes in the scuffle in the court premises. Later, the shoes were found on the feet of a mentally unstable woman from the court neighborhood.
