The Awami League is stepping up, claiming to bring back democracy

The Awami League has called for people to gather at Zero Point in Dhaka on November 10, inviting citizens to join a protest they claim will address the loss of democratic rights, rising fundamentalism, and difficulties faced by everyday people. The protest will be held on Shaheed Nur Hossain Day, which is observed every November 10 to honor Nur Hossain, a young activist who was killed in 1987 while protesting against authoritarian rule.

In a post on the Awami League’s official Facebook page on November 9, the party announced, “Come on November 10 to Nur Hossain Square, Zero Point, Gulistan, Dhaka. Our protest is against the deprivation of people’s rights, against the rise of fundamentalist forces, and against the conspiracies disrupting the lives of ordinary people. Join the protest with the leaders and workers of the Awami League to raise your voice against misrule.”

Shaheed Nur Hossain Day is a powerful reminder of Bangladesh’s struggle for democracy. Nur Hossain, a young activist, became a symbol of bravery after he was shot and killed in 1987 during a protest. His sacrifice helped spark a broader movement for democratic rights, and the day is now observed each year by political and civic groups to honor those who have fought for democracy.

This rally marks the first time the Awami League has announced field programs on Shaheed Nur Hossain Day since being ousted from power during the student-led uprising on August 5 of this year.
