The crisis in the country’s education system is so Intense that my mind is spinning: Education Adviser

Education Advisor Professor Dr. Wahiduddin Mahmud has commented that the ongoing crisis in the country’s education system has left him feeling overwhelmed. He made this remark in an interview with the media on Tuesday morning, January 28. He also mentioned that a new independent university will be created from the seven government colleges.

The Education Advisor clarified that by carelessly connecting these colleges with Dhaka University (DU), the administration has created a complicated problem. Nowadays, it takes time to establish a new institution; it can’t be completed in three days. It has structural components, and efforts are still being made to identify the university’s model. He underlined that this is a difficult procedure. According to Dr. Wahiduddin Mahmud, a university must take into account the long-term interests of its students because it would be in operation for many years. As a result, everything will be done carefully and rash judgements should be avoided.

Dr. Wahiduddin Mahmud also mentioned that establishing a university involves more than just appointing teachers. There are legal, financial, and accreditation matters, and the highest level of the state must be involved in granting degrees. Only then can a university be established.

He further stated that admitting students to a university before receiving accreditation is completely illegal. Dhaka University and the authorities of the seven colleges have decided to conduct separate admissions starting from the next academic session. Therefore, prospective students will be admitted through a specific process. The opinions of the college students regarding the upcoming 2024-25 academic year admissions will be considered, and decisions will be made after discussions with them.
