Sadiq Kayem

Highlights:

  • VP candidate Sadiq Kayem accuses rivals of conspiracy to disrupt the DUCSU election.
  • Complaints raised over polling agents and observers being barred.
  • Strong warning against campus unrest: “worse fate than Sheikh Hasina.”
  • Calls for proper investigation into all allegations.

Allegations of Conspiracy in DUCSU Election

At a press conference on Tuesday evening (9 September), Sadiq Kayem, the VP candidate from the Shibir-backed ‘United Student Alliance’ panel, alleged that conspiracies were underway to disrupt the DUCSU election. He emphasized that students would remain united against such efforts.

Complaints Over Voting Irregularities

Sadiq highlighted that at the ULAB centre, polling agents and observers were not allowed to enter for two and a half hours. He also reported cases of irregularities at Ekushay Hall and TSC centres.

He urged authorities to take immediate action:

Translation: “Those who are trying to make this election questionable and sabotage it must be arrested quickly.”

Warning Against Campus Unrest

Calling for a fair election in line with the aspirations of the martyrs, Sadiq appealed to all groups to act responsibly. At the same time, he issued a strong warning:

Translation: “If anyone tries to destabilize the campus, their fate will be worse than Sheikh Hasina’s.”

He also criticized the Dhaka University unit president of Chhatra Dal, accusing him of misbehaving with the Vice-Chancellor.

Response to Allegations Against Him

Addressing accusations about his presence inside a polling centre, Sadiq clarified his position:

Translation: “I mainly went to that centre to file complaints. At that time, the returning officers were leaving, and that was the main concern.”

Sadiq Kayem added that other candidates also entered the centre at the same time. He further accused a teacher aligned with a rival group of trying to exploit the situation.

Remarks from GS Candidate Forhad

At the same press conference, General Secretary (GS) candidate Forhad criticized the involvement of national political parties in the DUCSU election.

Translation: “The DUCSU election is for students. Turning it into a rehearsal for national politics is shameful.”

He also warned that their panel would accept punishment if any allegation against them was proven true:

Translation: “If any allegation against the United Student Alliance is proven, we will accept the punishment.”

Criticism of Rival Behavior

Forhad strongly condemned Chhatra Dal’s approach, accusing them of trying to forcefully enter polling centres despite already having their polling agents inside and LED screens outside.

Translation: “Students will not take it positively if mobs are created. Everyone must understand the students’ pulse and respect their decision.”
