Interim Government Accused of “Promotion-Friendly” Politics

Hasnat Abdullah, chief organizer of the National Citizen Party (NCP) for the southern region, criticized the interim government, saying it has become “promotion-friendly” instead of education-friendly as promised.

Translation: The interim government was not supposed to follow the old government’s path; it was expected to be education friendly. But the education adviser has become promotion friendly.

Allegations of Paid Postings in Dhaka

Speaking at a teachers’ gathering in front of the Central Shaheed Minar on Sunday (October 12), Hasnat Abdullah alleged that the education adviser is giving lucrative Dhaka city postings to those who supported Sheikh Hasina’s regime, often in exchange for money.

Translation: Those who once chanted slogans for Hasina during the old fascist regime are again being rewarded with good postings in Dhaka — in exchange for money.

He also accused the adviser of making postings and promotions the main activity of the ministry, instead of focusing on education reforms.

Translation: The daily routine of this government seems to be giving postings.

Support for Teachers’ Demands

Hasnat Abdullah made these comments during a protest by MPO-listed private school teachers, who were demanding a 20% increase in house rent and other financial benefits.

He said teachers were not asking for much, only what was fair compared to unnecessary ministry expenses.

Translation: Teachers are not asking for the same amount you spend daily on nuts and fruits in the ministry.

Hasnat pointed out how teachers’ salaries fail to cover basic living costs in Dhaka city.

Translation: Let’s assume their salary is Tk 12,500. Twenty percent of that is Tk 2,500 — show me where in Dhaka you can rent a house for that amount.

He added that even in small towns, living costs have risen sharply, saying:

Translation: Even breakfast costs Tk 150 now, and a cup of tea is Tk 10.

Call for Fair Treatment

Concluding his remarks, Hasnat Abdullah urged the interim government to act responsibly and listen to teachers’ demands, instead of repeating the mistakes of the previous administration. He warned that if corruption in postings continues, public trust in the interim system will quickly erode.
