BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has strongly responded to Jamaat-e-Islami’s dissatisfaction over the newly announced July Declaration. In a press conference held at the BNP Chairperson’s Office in Gulshan, he said those who are disappointed now will always remain disappointed. He called for a positive and democratic approach to overcome the political crisis.
BNP’s Official Reaction to the July Declaration
On Wednesday, 6 August, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the Secretary General of BNP, addressed a press conference at the BNP Chairperson’s Office in Gulshan. The purpose of this press event was to formally respond to the recently published “July Declaration” and BNP’s election-related plans.
Jamaat Expressed Disappointment Immediately
After the announcement of the July Declaration, Jamaat-e-Islami expressed dissatisfaction.
In an immediate reaction, Dr. Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher, Nayeb-e-Ameer of Jamaat, said:
“জুলাই ঘোষণাপত্রের জাতির আকাঙ্ক্ষা পূরণ হয়নি।”
(“The July Declaration did not fulfill the nation’s expectations.”)

Mirza Fakhrul’s Sharp Response to Jamaat’s Reaction
When asked about Jamaat’s disappointment, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir replied that Jamaat has not given any official statement yet, but their instant reaction was clear. He hoped they would eventually support a democratic path forward.
“তারা (জামায়াত) আনুষ্ঠানিক প্রতিক্রিয়া হয়তো এখনও দেয়নি। তাৎক্ষণিক প্রতিক্রিয়া তারা বলেছে-‘হতাশ’। আমরা আশা করব তারা একটা পজিটিভ দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি নিয়ে এই জাতীয় এবং গণতান্ত্রিক উত্তরণের পথকে পরিষ্কার করবে।”
(“They may not have given an official response yet, but they said ‘disappointed’ in their instant reaction. We hope they will take a positive perspective and help clear the path toward national and democratic transition.”)
“They Will Always Be Disappointed” – Says Fakhrul
In a direct and firm tone, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir criticized the negativity shown by some parties:
“জুলাই ঘোষণাপত্রে যারা হতাশ হয়েছেন, তারা সারাজীবন হতাশ থাকেন।”
(“Those who are disappointed by the July Declaration will remain disappointed forever.”)
BNP’s Goal: A Fair and Democratic Election
Fakhrul emphasized that BNP’s only aim is to return to a democratic system through a free and fair election. He said the people of the country also believe that only an election can solve the ongoing crisis.
“আমাদের উদ্দেশ্য হচ্ছে একটা নির্বাচনের মধ্য দিয়ে একটা গণতান্ত্রিক ব্যবস্থাতে যাওয়া। এজন্য নির্বাচন ছাড়া অন্য কোন কিছুতে বিশ্বাস করি না। গোটা জাতি মনে করে অতি দ্রুত একটি নির্বাচন একমাত্র পথ। যা দিয়ে আমরা বর্তমান রাজনৈতিক সংকট থেকে উত্তরণ করে গণতন্ত্রের দিকে যেতে পারি।”
(“Our aim is to go toward a democratic system through an election. We believe in nothing else but elections. The entire nation believes that a prompt election is the only way to overcome the current political crisis and move towards democracy.”)
Support for Dr. Muhammad Yunus
Mirza Fakhrul also spoke in support of Dr. Muhammad Yunus, saying that his past work shows he won’t do anything in the election process that might be questioned.
“এখন পর্যন্ত যতগুলো কাজ করে এসেছেন ড মুহাম্মদ ইউনূস। তাতে প্রমাণ করেছেন, ভবিষ্যতেও তিনি নির্বাচনকে সুষ্ঠু ও অবাধ করার জন্য এমন কিছু করবেন না, যেটা প্রশ্নবিদ্ধ হবে।”
(“So far, whatever Dr. Muhammad Yunus has done proves that he will not do anything in the future that will make the election questionable.”)
