Background of Brent Christensen
Brent Christensen is currently serving at the US Department of State in Washington, D.C., as an Under Secretary. He has a long career in diplomacy and has previously worked in several important roles for the US government.
Between 2019 and 2022, Christensen was posted at the US Embassy in Dhaka, where he served as the Political Counsellor. This experience has given him direct knowledge about Bangladesh’s political and diplomatic landscape.
Replacing Former Ambassador Peter Haas
If his nomination is confirmed by the US Senate, Christensen will officially take over the ambassador’s role from Peter Haas. Haas ended his tenure as the US Ambassador to Bangladesh last year before going into retirement.
After Haas’s departure, the US State Department temporarily appointed another senior diplomat, Tracy Ann Jacobson, as the Chargé d’Affaires (acting ambassador) to manage the embassy’s work in Dhaka.
What Comes Next
Christensen’s nomination now requires approval from the US Senate. Once confirmed, he will return to Dhaka, this time as the official US Ambassador, to strengthen diplomatic, political, and economic ties between the United States and Bangladesh.
