Trump’s bold declaration of a 100% tariff on foreign films

Trump declared tariff on Foreign Films
100% Tariff on Foreign Films to Protect Hollywood

Donald Trump announces a 100% Tariff on Foreign Films, calling it a move to protect the American film industry from global competition and preserve national interests. According to him, the American film industry is under threat, and now is the time to defend it.

On Monday, May 5, Al Jazeera reported that Trump made this declaration on Sunday, May 4, through a post on his social media platform, Truth Social.

In his post, Trump wrote that “Other countries are offering all kinds of incentives to lure away our filmmakers. Hollywood and other regions of the American film industry are suffering. This isn’t just competition, it’s a coordinated effort and it poses a threat to our national security. It’s about influence and propaganda.”

He has directed the U.S. Department of Commerce and the U.S. Trade Representative to immediately begin the process of enforcing this 100% tariff on all foreign-produced films. However, how this tariff will actually be implemented still remains unclear.

He added, “We’re making far fewer films now. Other countries have stolen our film industry. If they don’t want to produce movies in America, then we should impose tariffs on theirs.”

Prior to this announcement Trump appointed three Hollywood veterans,Sylvester Stallone, Mel Gibson and Jon Voight as “special envoys.” Their mission to revive the golden age of Hollywood. Trump stated that these actors would serve as his “eyes and ears” as he works toward restoring the industry’s lost glory.

It’s important to note that Hollywood has faced major challenges in recent years. The COVID-19 pandemic hit the industry hard, followed by the long actor and writer strikes in 2023. In 2024, Hollywood studios earned around $30 billion globally and 7% drop compared to the previous year.

Trump’s bold move has already sparked debate. Some view it as a necessary step to protect American culture and creativity, while others see it as the start of new trade tensions in the global entertainment market.
